Huet = #1
-
Cristobal Huet’s got something to prove.
Maybe the All-Star snub got under his skin. Maybe not.
Maybe having the NHL’s biggest secret is a good thing.
Huet backstopped the Habs to a “shutout shootout” win over the Panthers, his sixth consecutive win.
6 straight wins, Leagues best Save % and best Goals Against Average.
No more 1a, 1b. Huet is 1 period.

- goalie : I don't know when they'll announce it but the Oilers will be signing Sutter (Flames ex-coach) to coach their team - that's why Kevin Lowe chose him to coach in the World's. That was the world's worst kept secret.
- Senet1 : I guess I wish we could get it done so all the speculating was over and we can get to building out team.
- goalie : I can't type.... what a faux pas on my behalf...
- goalie : I just realized what I said adn didn't say yesterday. What a fayx as on my behalf. Regarding coaching Randy Cunnyworth MUSDT stay as an assistant- he deserves at least that after the tremendous job he did in the latter part of this past season. I'd still mlike to have Robinson, Carbo adn Allard on the staff also.
- Avatar37 : I agree Senet, my choice if we can't have Cunneyworth would be Crawford, Robinson on defense, Cunneyworth for offense, and Carbo as offense/faceoffs .
- Senet1 : I think if I had my choice it would be Crawford and see if he could get Carbo and Robinson as assistants. That would be my idea coaching team.
- goalie : I witnesed Marc Crawford MANY times when the Avs, etc. played against Oilers and let me tell you - he is constantly on the referees asses virtually game after game. He is the complete OPPOSITE of J. Martin. Crawford is calm on TSN but he is one excited coach behind the bench. A friend of mine who was an NHL linesman for 26 years said they dreaded Crawford he was so tough on the officials!
- goalie : You know, I've bee thinking about the coaching situation. I'd be really excited if the Habs had Hartley as head coach and Carbo adn Robinson as his assistants. I also read it somewhere about a month ago that Toronto's goalie coach Allard (?) wants to relocate back to Montreal where he has his goaltending school/business. Add him to the mix and I'd say the Habs would be in great shape coaching wise.
- Avatar37 : Well, from what I recall, Hartley didn't do all that well with the Thrashers. But, I don't know enough about him to judge one way or the other. Crawford I do know, and he always seemed to be a good, level headed coach to me.
- Senet1 : even Pacioretty two years ago did not impress any of us. Younger players have to play and make mistakes and learn from those mistakes. If they sit in the press box they are learning nothing.
- Senet1 : Of course if he have some good assistants like a Larry Robinson to teach the young defence and someone like Carbo to teach faceoffs etc. then your coach does not have to be as good at teaching. If Hartley fits the bill you get no argument from me. My only previous point is that if he is impatient with your younger players to the point that he does not play them, then we are right back where we were with Martin. Martin was a good coach too, but how he handled Emelin, PK and even Pacioretty two
- goalie : I would like to see the Habs sign a coach who realizes that our team isn't tough enough (we need to get bigger and somewhat more nastier),the coach needs t be a great TEACHER and be a coach who can get the players to understand and buy into his system. Other than that I couldn't care what lingo he speaks. I wnat to see our team become a ligitimate contender fast!
- HabsLoseAgain : Well we dont know if he is or is not a teaching coach. I woukd just hate to paint Hartley something that he is not. There will always be questions but if Hartley was hired as the habs new bench boss i for one would not be overly upset.
- Senet1 : My thoughts are not that he is or is not a good coach but rather that when he won the cup he had an experience team of superstars on that team. Where as we have a group of young inexperienced players, is he a teaching coach or a tactical coach or both? I am not question whether he is a good coach, but my question therefore is he the coach for us at this point in the deveopment of our team?? Not sure we are all purely speculating at the moment?
- Senet1 : Something happened to my first post. I will try again.
- Senet1 : That is why I said I am not sure he is the coach for us at this time? Right now we are all speculating including yourself, because non of us know for sure?
- HabsLoseAgain : Crawford also won a cup with Patrick Roy so would you say he is a good coach or did he just have great players and one of the best goaltenders of alltime?
- HabsLoseAgain : Senrt so please give me some reasons why you think Hartley is not the coach the habs need right now. What is it that you do not like about him or his coaching style?
- HabsLoseAgain : Well all great coaches had great players playing for them so i guess you you add a a pile of other coaches to that list including Bowan......
- Senet1 : Hartley, was he a good coach or did he just have great players and one of the best altime goaltenders of all time. I am not sure that he is the type of coach that this organization needs right now. Unless of course we sign a ton of free agents.
- Avatar37 : However, my feelings may completely be wrong, Hartley may turn out to be a good fit.
- Avatar37 : I didn't say Hartley was unknown, I said we demoted a good coach in Cunneyworth and now have an unknown quantity because we don't have a coach. I don't have that great a feeling about Hartley, I'd be much more comfortable with Crawford.
- HabsLoseAgain : In my opinion i think he might be a good fit in montreal. Oh and he also likes to have a tough team.
- HabsLoseAgain : Also this year he coached the ZSC Lions to the swiss championship title.
- HabsLoseAgain : lol the so called "unknown" won a cup in 2000-2001 with the colarado avalanch.
- HabsLoseAgain : lol Bob Hartley is not an unknown lol.....sheesh.
- Senet1 : I think he has until the trading deadline to show us that he deserves to be on this team. If he does not get back on track then he could be simply a 2nd round draft pick to whoever we can trade him to.
- Avatar37 : Bourque reminds me of Pouliot, size, skill, and invisible. He needs to get back to playing a physical game and bang people around and maybe he'll start getting some of those garbage goals again. Need to get to the front of the net. I hope he can find his game again.
- Avatar37 : We had a good coach in Randy Cunneyworth. Now we have an unknown, with Bob Hartley rumoured to be the front runner. I'd rather have Cunneyworth.
- goalie : A player like Rene Bourwue has al the physical attributes of what would be a beter than average player. Hwever, he certainly didn't play that well especially after being in Montreal about three weeks. We NEED players like Rene to play hard AND produce points on a REGULAR BASIS in order for us to be competitive.
- Senet1 : MONTREAL – Rene Bourque had a rocky start to his career as a Hab, but he’s planning on using the next four years to make up for it. After arriving in Montreal under less-than-ideal circumstances in January, Bourque spent the following 38 games hoping to find the spark he needed to rekindle his offensive production. Despite flanking Tomas Plekanec on the team’s second line to close out the season, the 30-year-old sniper suddenly found himself firing blanks in his new NHL home.
- Senet1 : I think we have to be patient and not expect too much too soon. Let's get a strong management team in place, make a good choices in the draft get a good coach and then see what we need at the free agent market. I will not be too disapointed if we miss the playoffs again next year if it means a long term team success. We have the opportunity to make some major strides over the next two years at the draft table. Then we fill in the holes.
- goalie : I certainly agree that we need to get some impact forwards who will sign for 5 years, not for a season then walk away. That's not going to help us.
- goalie : I wouldn't trade PK for Ovetchkin no matter what. He is a coach's NIGHTMARE and a poor team player.
- Senet1 : I believe he will as we graducally put better players around him and build this team.

You couldn’t be more correct. I’m not sure what they’ll do with Aebischer, as he’s an excellent backup goalie and they definitely rather have Price playing somewhere rather than sitting on the Bench in the NHL. I’d make a few points:
1) First, the TSN crowd predicted that Huet would stick this year. Darren Dredger said that “he goes down faster than a human Zamboni” (whatever that means), and that “the book was out on Huet”. Clearly, Dredger knows not of what he speaks. They also predicted that neither the Canadiens nor the Leafs would make the playoffs, and that Calgary would finish atop the West. I disagreed with their predictions then, and I obviously disagree with them now.
2) Huet is the best goalie that Montreal has seen since Patrick Roy. Roy succeeded over a very long time, and Huet is just really getting started, but Huet is not “streaky” like Theodore. By that I mean that Huet has not depended on spectacular saves, which as Patrick Roy once pointed out, is something a goalie does after he’s made a positional mistake. The thing about Huet and Roy is that both of them seem to never need to make the great save. The puck just seems to hit them. And that’s what happens to good goalies–they just get hit by the puck.
3) Hasek was also a late bloomer, playing backup with crappy save percentages until he was 30 years old or so. Huet has always posted great save percentages, even when he was a backup goalie. This is simply a great acquisition, and while we may all be a bit surprised about his performance, I’m not sure the Canadiens head office didn’t recognize his potential when they acquired him. Whoever it is in Montreal who picks out the goaltenders, that person needs a raise.
I feel so great to once again have a stellar goaltender who clearly relies more on focus and positioning than on luck. They are doing a great job with this team: thank God Gaigney is here!

Happy Habs won (kudos to Huet), but disappointed the Canadiens didn’t stamp their authority all over the game. I expected the Habs to be just as motivated as the Panthers which would equate to a superior performance, but it didn’t work out that way.
QUESTION. I would not be disappointed if Huet didn’t have to go to the all-star game and could rest – however, it irks me that he is not recognized while Raycroft is. I know the all-star lineup is determined by the fans voting, but is it the fans that decide who is on the ballot, too? If the fans determine the ballot, too, then Huet’s absence is just a matter of other cities having more voter participation. If the ballot is determined by the NHL, then I would be interested in understanding how they came to chose Raycroft over Huet?? More “Toronto is the center of the hockey universe” B.S.
BTW – you guys should check out http://www.habsinsideout.com – a new site run by the boys from the gazette. Lots of commentary with the 1st podcast containing some entertaining comments at the end about T.O.

Another spectacular game by Huet:(I sure hope everyone at Sportsnet, Darren Dreger, Pierre McGuire, Glenn Healy, and Mark Osbourne have been watching Huet’s last 6 games.)
But can someone please light a couple of fires under Ryder and Samsonov.
Ryder:1 goal in his last 14 games.
Samsonov:0 goals in his last 13 games.
I know we’ve been saying it all season but these two need to step up. the surprising thing about Ryder is that he’s playing for a long term deal and he’s not preforming.
November 29, 2006 at 12:34 pm
Don’t know what’s going on with Ryder really, I tought we would have a good year. He is not playing bad on the ice, he play the puck, try something sometimes but we don’t really see him. Looks like he watch Koivu and Latendresse (Higgins before) make their play, instead of joining them.
For Samsonov… what can you say really…. he skate but doesn’t do much anything else… may be he is too fast and the others guys never know where he is….
HabsInBlood : Not sure if it’s true, but I saw it on TV. They said that in the off-season, the guys choose who should be included in the list. They meet again in October to choose the guys that should be added or removed.
So what you see on the list, are the guys who were HOT LAST YEAR. and Huet was hot, but they all tought it was just a matter of time before he goes down, and in october he didn’t have a good chart like he have now. That probably explain why he is not on the list and Raycroft is….
November 29, 2006 at 12:52 pm
Thanks for the info. The funny thing is didn’t Raycroft suck in Boston last year?
November 29, 2006 at 12:59 pm
Geez, I remember reading in October how a lot of you idiots were all over Huet for not being as sharp as Aebischer and that he should be traded while I said he’d find his old form… I’m right, you gunjumpers are all wrong. Thank God you aren’t the GM. I also read how you’re all over Sergei Samsonov cuz he isn’t scoring. Now I know you all seem to love one dimensional scorers but he ain’t one of those, in fact, look at his career stats, he’s at best a 20-30 goal guy. He’s a great skater and a smart crafty forward who always gives all. So yeah, get all over the guy. Did any of you ever think of the little unseen things that he does? His teammates, his coaches and us fans with real hockey sense all appreciate him. I’ve said before here and I’ll say it again now, some of you so-called Habfans are more akin to being Leaf fans, whining when you lose and complaining when you win, never content with anything. You disgust me.
November 29, 2006 at 1:01 pm
But the problem is, it’s the fans determining who gets on the allstar team, when it really should be determined bt the coaches, GM’s and commentators.Let’s let the experts decide. I’m sure, that if they look at wins, save%, and such, they will come to realize that a goalie, such as Huet, should be on the team.Fans in large cities, such as NY and Boston, are going to stuff the ballot box. So population should not determine who is on, and who isn’t. I hope NHL officials will change the format.
As far as the habs are concerned, it’s nice that we won, ( but by the scantest margin), but where was the offence? We were playing Florida, a last place team with a horrible road record. we couldn’t manage to get any goals by ALEX AULD? C’mon guys pick up your game. Yeah, Huet was good, but you can’t always depend on him. what if he happens to have a bad game? Our offence has gone to sleep, but now it must wake up, because we’re playing in Carolina on Thursday, and back home to meet our arch rivals, LEAFS, whom I hate! I see Samsanov skating, but never finishing the plays.Ryder seems lost lately and just plain invisible.Plekanec is a DEFENSIVE player, and doesn’t belong on the 2nd line. Move Bonk to 2nd line, until we can find a replacement. Perehzogin skates, but never finishes. If only we could replace Samsanov, and Perehzogin with finishers, and guys who know what they’re doing, then we would be okay.I hate to criticize, but honestly we have scored 3 goals in the last 2 games. not acceptable. Remember, teams with offence such as Buffalo, and Atlanta, will score. And when we get behind, we simply don’t have the offence to come back. Last night I watched the post game press conference, and Carbo said:”we must find a way to score goals, especially 5 on 5.We’re very weak on offence; We need more production, and we must play 60 minutes of hockey”! guys, this is straight from Carbo’s mouth, not mine! So heed what he said, because he is telling the truth!Tho we have a good record, remember, cups aren’t won in November. I can recall us getting off to a good start last year, then we started losing, went into the the tank, and backed into the playoffs on the LAST GAME of the season!Do we want the same results?
November 29, 2006 at 1:09 pm
There’s such a thing as negativity, but there’s also CONSTRUCTIVE CRITICISM! What I’m stating, was stated by CARBO, so listen to him!People who think are offence is fine, should look at our goal production compared to other winning teams.it takes both offence and defence to win games. yes we’re winning now, but come January and February,(without changes), what will happen?
November 29, 2006 at 1:32 pm
fanatic1…everything past the all-star stuff is right on. On the last blog, Big Kevin saw things from a different perspective…insightful too!
Not sure of Carbonneau’s long haul as coach but I’m hoping he’ll get the rest of the Habs working on a consistent and productive mode. Go Habs Go!
November 29, 2006 at 1:52 pm
Always remember that a goalie success (and his failure) is often influenced by the defense around him. The fact that guys like Komi, etc, are playing with more confidence is helping Huet case. Not to take anything away from him, but I am sure even he would admit that the defensive play of the HABS is helping him.
November 29, 2006 at 2:13 pm
The next two games should be nerve wraking;step on those’s Leifs and kick ‘em
around all game please.
November 29, 2006 at 2:26 pm
Hey, if boston can beat T.O. 4-1, we should be able to get a couple goals on them. Raycroft may be good, but he aint no all-star and I’m sure nobody out there knows why he is in the all-star list, except for Laffs fans that’ll have a hundred reasons to rant about how good he is…
November 29, 2006 at 3:03 pm
I really think that the exchange *Garon for Bonk and Huet* was a mother*censured* exchange. And i remember when people cried about how Garon was good lol. I have faith in Gainey, i have faith in Carbo, i have faith. Go Habs Go!!!
November 29, 2006 at 3:11 pm
HOw dare anyone criticize me!! I am the great and almighty Darren Dreger. I have been on both TSN and sportsnet. BUt since you all seem to disagree with me I have come up with new predictions:
1) Habs miss the playoffs every year fo r thenext 400 years.
2) Leafs win th epresidents trophy
3) HUet is lucky until christmas then does his human zamboni thingy.
4) TSN will rank #1 in non interesting, all american clashes. ex Minne vs SJ
5) Pierre McGuire wil win the Noble Prize for his book on Huet.
Anyways I am the great Darren Dragqueen so you must all obey my predictions and worship me.
November 29, 2006 at 3:15 pm
I just came onto this blog to tell everyone something very important. I have noticed Huet likes to go down alot. Kinda like every other butterflyu goalie that has ever played. Soon teams will know this and HUet will be really bad. Like cmon how hard is it to have the best Save % and GAA in the league??? I say it is all luck.
November 29, 2006 at 3:17 pm
Go Leafs!!!
November 29, 2006 at 3:17 pm
I think Kovalev is selfish.
November 29, 2006 at 4:23 pm
what are all these leafs guys doing on our blog? you guys get bored of speaking to self-minded, uninteresting squareheads called leaf fans and decided to see our cool blog?
November 29, 2006 at 4:26 pm
oh wait… I just got the joke… man I feel stupid rite now…
November 29, 2006 at 4:52 pm
they are just impersonators, because they can’t think of anything intelligent to say, kind of like their namesake.they belong on a blog for children, because their mentality is such!Hey morons, go back to living under a rock!
November 29, 2006 at 5:53 pm
I agree – is there a way to introduce an I.Q. test that signups must pass before being allowed to participate in this blog.
November 29, 2006 at 7:16 pm
The canadian junior team has asked the Habs permission to have Guillaume on their team. If Higgins was healthy I would have said go for it because it probably would have been a good experience for him after last year’s turney. He probably would have been given more responsibility and he would take in some more lessons on what it takes to win.
BUT, since higgins is injured unless Kotstitsyn(who I noticed scored two goals last night, set up by Grabovski who it’s good to see back and playing with the Bulldogs) is ready to step up, I don’t see or think he should go.
November 29, 2006 at 7:27 pm
NEWS FLASH……..LEAFS WIN 1967 STANLEY CUP…..
November 29, 2006 at 8:01 pm
I wasn’t born then! was that the old days when there was only 6 teams? I think leaf fans were forced to watch it on black and white tv, because color tv’s weren’t in existence yet. Also, microwave ovens weren’t invented yet.so, how long have dinosaurs been extinct? as long as it’s been since the leafs won the cup!Better plant those buds again, and wait another 1,000 years!
November 29, 2006 at 8:06 pm
Oh by the way guys, that was me who put those ridiculous posts from the TSN panel on here. IT was meant to be very very sarcastic. It was no tLeafs fans it was just my way of makinthe TSN panel eat their own mo*onic words.
November 29, 2006 at 8:36 pm
I love this blog!
First, let me say the comments by most, but especially Groundworking and HB itself, are a pleasure to read. It really shows that these are a group of serious Habs and hockey fans; it’s what makes the game, the team, and discussion thereof, great. Who cares about the Toronto gang (incl. TSN) anyway? Most of them could only dream about the following the RDS team get!!!
I agree with smiler###, there are some who want to trade the team on a bad pass. There is no such thing as a perfect team, especially in this Gary Bettman era, so we need to give a little slack when blackouts occur.
Speaking of which, both Ryder and Sammy have been disappointing, there’s no doubt. But with the better part of 3/4 of a season to go, anything more than Carbo’s “motivational” press conferences would be silly. I am convinced that both these guys will be showing up when crunch time happens. As someone commented a few posts ago, don’t forget the meltdown last year during the time that Theo lost all those games and Markov was hurt. We have a far deeper team this year.
Finally, Latendresse should definately go to the Championships. The opportunity to play for your country (and hopefully win) will help his confidence. He knows he’s made the big team, and what it takes to stay there, so there’s less likelihood of last year’s shenanegans at the Juniors. The Habs have some depth and now’s the time to test it… even iat the cost of a game or two. Bring Kostitsyn up and let him play a little in the big leagues. Higgins in back in 3-4 weeks and we need to know what happens (hopefully not!!) in case of more injuries.

I really don’t think Huet’s concerned about all-star recognition perse. I think being an athlete on a team, he works to gain respect from his team mates through demonstration and performance and when he isn’t successful on some nights, he’s disappointed. Apart from this, Huet doesn’t strike me as a person in need of the trappings and festival associated with the all-star break to validate his worth. I’m sure he would enjoy the moment, but in my opinion, being the ‘cool cuke’ he appears to be, i seriously don’t think he places as high a value on an all-star team (spot) as he does staying focussed on the job at hand. And this is what i would rather see than for him to get caught up in the distractions the all-star game could bring.
Besides, he only started catching fire recently. To put him on the ballot even a month ago would have presumably brought a few HUH’s? to this blog anyway. Right or wrong?
BTW, Dreger’s not that bad. The mind boggles though, when Sportsnet’s Kypreos opens his yap. He loves to hear himself talk and adds little to the commentary. Remember 2 minutes in the box (or something like that)? He makes Don Cherry look like Einstein. And what about that other freak with the weirdie beardo and sunglasses on that live radio show. WTF is that? Another aural-narcissist, only this guy’s still looking for that roach he dropped on the floor in 1983. Fckn’ sad…
End-Rant
November 30, 2006 at 9:35 am
Appropos… Did anyone hear Tie Domi during intermission on TSN (sorry, there wasn’t much on and I took in part of the Wild/SJ game) last night? When asked which team would he most have liked to play for (but din’t) during his career, he answered… you can guess the rest… the Habs!!! I guess that’s one point for respect!!! Wow.
November 30, 2006 at 12:26 pm
hey Gumper, the weirdo beardo with sunglasses on the radio is Bob McCown. Been on Toronto TV sports and radio since the late ’70s. He’s a transplanted American but pretty much is totally Canadianized. Kind of into himself, says he wears the shades cuz the TV lights in the radio studio are so bright, yeah whatever. Not much of a Leaf fan, which is a plus but tends to be full of himself and prefers talking the business end of sports rather than the games themselves. Yawn.
November 30, 2006 at 12:30 pm
Who’s Tie Domi?
November 30, 2006 at 3:28 pm
God help us all if the leafs fluke out and win a cup in the next 20 years, the national media coverage would be more unbearable than it is now.BUT THEN AGAIN
NOT TO WORRY ,PIGS CAN’T FLY!
