Patrice Brisebois Encore
-
Patrice Brisebois is once again a Montreal Canadien.

Is this a smart move for the Habs? Is this an insurance policy or is Bob Gainey shuffling D-men for a potential trade?

Long time Canadiens punching bag Patrice Brisebois may be back with the CH.
Bob Gainey has apparently made him a contract offer.

- Senet1 : It will be interesting to see how Sutter does because to me the Oilers are not his kind of team, but then again neither were the Flames.
- goalie : I don't know when they'll announce it but the Oilers will be signing Sutter (Flames ex-coach) to coach their team - that's why Kevin Lowe chose him to coach in the World's. That was the world's worst kept secret.
- Senet1 : I guess I wish we could get it done so all the speculating was over and we can get to building out team.
- goalie : I can't type.... what a faux pas on my behalf...
- goalie : I just realized what I said adn didn't say yesterday. What a fayx as on my behalf. Regarding coaching Randy Cunnyworth MUSDT stay as an assistant- he deserves at least that after the tremendous job he did in the latter part of this past season. I'd still mlike to have Robinson, Carbo adn Allard on the staff also.
- Avatar37 : I agree Senet, my choice if we can't have Cunneyworth would be Crawford, Robinson on defense, Cunneyworth for offense, and Carbo as offense/faceoffs .
- Senet1 : I think if I had my choice it would be Crawford and see if he could get Carbo and Robinson as assistants. That would be my idea coaching team.
- goalie : I witnesed Marc Crawford MANY times when the Avs, etc. played against Oilers and let me tell you - he is constantly on the referees asses virtually game after game. He is the complete OPPOSITE of J. Martin. Crawford is calm on TSN but he is one excited coach behind the bench. A friend of mine who was an NHL linesman for 26 years said they dreaded Crawford he was so tough on the officials!
- goalie : You know, I've bee thinking about the coaching situation. I'd be really excited if the Habs had Hartley as head coach and Carbo adn Robinson as his assistants. I also read it somewhere about a month ago that Toronto's goalie coach Allard (?) wants to relocate back to Montreal where he has his goaltending school/business. Add him to the mix and I'd say the Habs would be in great shape coaching wise.
- Avatar37 : Well, from what I recall, Hartley didn't do all that well with the Thrashers. But, I don't know enough about him to judge one way or the other. Crawford I do know, and he always seemed to be a good, level headed coach to me.
- Senet1 : even Pacioretty two years ago did not impress any of us. Younger players have to play and make mistakes and learn from those mistakes. If they sit in the press box they are learning nothing.
- Senet1 : Of course if he have some good assistants like a Larry Robinson to teach the young defence and someone like Carbo to teach faceoffs etc. then your coach does not have to be as good at teaching. If Hartley fits the bill you get no argument from me. My only previous point is that if he is impatient with your younger players to the point that he does not play them, then we are right back where we were with Martin. Martin was a good coach too, but how he handled Emelin, PK and even Pacioretty two
- goalie : I would like to see the Habs sign a coach who realizes that our team isn't tough enough (we need to get bigger and somewhat more nastier),the coach needs t be a great TEACHER and be a coach who can get the players to understand and buy into his system. Other than that I couldn't care what lingo he speaks. I wnat to see our team become a ligitimate contender fast!
- HabsLoseAgain : Well we dont know if he is or is not a teaching coach. I woukd just hate to paint Hartley something that he is not. There will always be questions but if Hartley was hired as the habs new bench boss i for one would not be overly upset.
- Senet1 : My thoughts are not that he is or is not a good coach but rather that when he won the cup he had an experience team of superstars on that team. Where as we have a group of young inexperienced players, is he a teaching coach or a tactical coach or both? I am not question whether he is a good coach, but my question therefore is he the coach for us at this point in the deveopment of our team?? Not sure we are all purely speculating at the moment?
- Senet1 : Something happened to my first post. I will try again.
- Senet1 : That is why I said I am not sure he is the coach for us at this time? Right now we are all speculating including yourself, because non of us know for sure?
- HabsLoseAgain : Crawford also won a cup with Patrick Roy so would you say he is a good coach or did he just have great players and one of the best goaltenders of alltime?
- HabsLoseAgain : Senrt so please give me some reasons why you think Hartley is not the coach the habs need right now. What is it that you do not like about him or his coaching style?
- HabsLoseAgain : Well all great coaches had great players playing for them so i guess you you add a a pile of other coaches to that list including Bowan......
- Senet1 : Hartley, was he a good coach or did he just have great players and one of the best altime goaltenders of all time. I am not sure that he is the type of coach that this organization needs right now. Unless of course we sign a ton of free agents.
- Avatar37 : However, my feelings may completely be wrong, Hartley may turn out to be a good fit.
- Avatar37 : I didn't say Hartley was unknown, I said we demoted a good coach in Cunneyworth and now have an unknown quantity because we don't have a coach. I don't have that great a feeling about Hartley, I'd be much more comfortable with Crawford.
- HabsLoseAgain : In my opinion i think he might be a good fit in montreal. Oh and he also likes to have a tough team.
- HabsLoseAgain : Also this year he coached the ZSC Lions to the swiss championship title.
- HabsLoseAgain : lol the so called "unknown" won a cup in 2000-2001 with the colarado avalanch.
- HabsLoseAgain : lol Bob Hartley is not an unknown lol.....sheesh.
- Senet1 : I think he has until the trading deadline to show us that he deserves to be on this team. If he does not get back on track then he could be simply a 2nd round draft pick to whoever we can trade him to.
- Avatar37 : Bourque reminds me of Pouliot, size, skill, and invisible. He needs to get back to playing a physical game and bang people around and maybe he'll start getting some of those garbage goals again. Need to get to the front of the net. I hope he can find his game again.
- Avatar37 : We had a good coach in Randy Cunneyworth. Now we have an unknown, with Bob Hartley rumoured to be the front runner. I'd rather have Cunneyworth.
- goalie : A player like Rene Bourwue has al the physical attributes of what would be a beter than average player. Hwever, he certainly didn't play that well especially after being in Montreal about three weeks. We NEED players like Rene to play hard AND produce points on a REGULAR BASIS in order for us to be competitive.
- Senet1 : MONTREAL – Rene Bourque had a rocky start to his career as a Hab, but he’s planning on using the next four years to make up for it. After arriving in Montreal under less-than-ideal circumstances in January, Bourque spent the following 38 games hoping to find the spark he needed to rekindle his offensive production. Despite flanking Tomas Plekanec on the team’s second line to close out the season, the 30-year-old sniper suddenly found himself firing blanks in his new NHL home.
- Senet1 : I think we have to be patient and not expect too much too soon. Let's get a strong management team in place, make a good choices in the draft get a good coach and then see what we need at the free agent market. I will not be too disapointed if we miss the playoffs again next year if it means a long term team success. We have the opportunity to make some major strides over the next two years at the draft table. Then we fill in the holes.
- goalie : I certainly agree that we need to get some impact forwards who will sign for 5 years, not for a season then walk away. That's not going to help us.
- goalie : I wouldn't trade PK for Ovetchkin no matter what. He is a coach's NIGHTMARE and a poor team player.

the wheels are in motion…welcome home breezeby
August 3, 2007 at 5:51 pm
wow,I’m the first!YAY! ok,well Patrice brisebois is 36, and we don’t need him.Dandenault will be likely traded maybe to San Jose or Columbus, but we brisebois for cheap and he is thinking that this will be his last season. He was born in Montreal it’s his favorite team and he will have a great season I hope.
August 3, 2007 at 7:36 pm
Everyone should read the article on Brisbois on the habs site…………it is now more apparent than ever as to why they would bring him back…… he makes a comment about how he and Carbo and Muller all won the cup together in 1993……….think about it……those 2 coaches I am sure last year talked up their cup experience to the players but to no avail…..now they have an actual player on the team who can back their preaching up!!!!!! Now this makes sense as to why they brought him back!!!!
Hope this works!!!
August 4, 2007 at 12:37 am
Brisebois will be fine. Huge impact in the dressing room and finally, a player who WANTS to be in Habville. For the price, good value, pure and simple. Dont expect much, however, but dont forget – this guy helped the Habs win a cup. Give him a break and welcome his back my friends. Enough with the anti Breezeby ****. Move on. Bob G. is a genius – and very couragous for making this move. Takes guts to make such in move in Montreal. Let time determine the winner of this deal.
August 4, 2007 at 1:16 am
Trade coming perhaps? I would think yes espically with all the young talented Dmen coming up, O’Byrne, Valentenko, Carle, Fischer and McDonagh.
August 4, 2007 at 2:52 am
Tell-you what BC Genius,if the Habs do well then B Gainey &Carbo will officially be in the Genius catagory in my mind and in fact shock the entire hockey world! That’s not asking too much is it?lol
August 4, 2007 at 10:06 am
Wow. And I thought Gainey said he was done with all his “big” moves. Guess he had to go get a whipping boy to take care of the inevitable heat Hammerlicker is gonna get, and who better than the most booed Hab in recent history? Another Ninnimma-esque type player who will be scratched as often as he plays, or even more. I’d rather see a rookie there, learning his craft than a known pylon.
August 4, 2007 at 10:28 am
I never had a problem with Brisebois. Good move, here’s hoping the fans treat him better than they did and I’m sure he’s going to have a better Plus/Minus than Sheldon Souray’s -28!
August 4, 2007 at 11:28 am
I have this (crazy) convincing feeling that Bib Gainey will either pull a trade that will BRIGHTEN the team or will do one stupid (unforgivable) mistake which ill riuin his (so much) respected reputation
*Brisebois was a very good acquisition. It showed some class in both Brisebois and General manager Bob Gainey. Both have what we call gutzz.
August 5, 2007 at 12:38 pm
Hmmm…I don’t know what to think of this acquisition. I definitely wasn’t Brisbois’ biggest fan with his first stint with the team, and I have no idea how he did away from the team. All I can say is that I still have faith in Gainey. So, I’m willing to give Patrice a chance to prove that he’s become a better player.
August 5, 2007 at 3:39 pm
Canwest news service is reporting that Mr Scotty Bowman may at the end of the week become the Leafs senior advisor.OH-oh!
August 6, 2007 at 1:22 pm
The point is that he isn’t here for the money, he is here for the team and that’s exactly the kind of player we need. This may be his last season before his retirement and i believe he will, by all means, make it his most memorable one and give it his all. His heart and soul like he said.
GO HABS GO!
August 6, 2007 at 1:32 pm
Bowman denies it…
Isn’t he too intelligent to risk tarnishing his reputation and achievements with such a weak organization? It would take years to dig themselves out of the messy their contracts and many more to replentish the talent in the form of prospects, since they traded 2 top picks away this year for a #2 goalie (better hope TUUKKA Rask comes of age soon)… cuz it would be a while to build the organizations depth chart which currently ranks among the bottom 5 in the NHL.
Bowman join the Habs if you want to join something worth while… come home.
August 6, 2007 at 5:48 pm
coutNY…Tuukka Rask is Boston’s property.
August 6, 2007 at 7:25 pm
This is exactly what the habs are in need of. When i looked at our D, i had no idea who would be our #4. I thought of possibly O’byrne but that would be a lot to ask. Brisebois will be a great as a non-top pairing defenseman. amd at 700k, what is there to lose. It’s not like it’s the end of the world if this doesnt turn out well. He’s earning close to 2 million dollars less than niinimaa did so this move is great. I agree wth mysteryfan on post 3. brisebois can be the bridge to the players that we needed. he can reinforce all that carbo and muller say about 93. Our Defense fairs pretty well against the other teams in our division and the majority of the teams on our conference.
August 6, 2007 at 10:01 pm
All the same coutNY habs bro, what does Bowman have left to prove, think about it,if he made the laff’s a cup winner, that would make Scotty a hockey god, just what an ego like his needs,I mean I can’t even phantom Taranna grapenuts with a stanley cup!lol.Infact the thought just made me feel sick!
August 7, 2007 at 8:35 am
LEBeau ~ All the more reason Scotty wouldn’t take the job….LOL
Boy things look even more bleek for TO than I thought.
I meant Justin Pogge. Thanks for the correction!
XtraHabsfan ~ True, but Bowman and his ego would need complete control in order to turn that club into a winner. Ferguson would need more than just advice from Bowman, he needs to clean house, and admit everything he’s done to this point was a mistake, than quit and give Bowman the helm. Not seeing that happen!
August 7, 2007 at 11:01 am
Lets not forget what just happened in Ottawa,Toronto is so desperate for the cup”not since 1967,when I was eight years old and the movie box office hit,Clint Eastwoods the good, the bad and the ugly or top T.V.show Rowan and Martins Laugh-in,LOL”If they had a chance good bye Fergie, lol.Man and his world at Montreals Expo 67,wow,ha ha ha ha……
August 8, 2007 at 11:13 am
I saw Brisebois in Colorado the last 2 years. I think it’s a bad move for the Habs. He’ll be decent the first 15-20 games, lots of points from the point. But Patrice is slow and gives the puck away in his own zone a lot.
Considering how much people booed him last time he was with the Habs, I’m guessing he’ll ride the bench most of the season.
He’s just too old and too slow. Sorry, guys.
August 8, 2007 at 12:53 pm
I believe that even with all of MTL’s players this year It will be a battle to get into the playoffs. and It will be hard.
August 10, 2007 at 10:37 pm
Very interesting article about the value given forth to Numbers: http://www.habsinsideout.com/2007/08/plekanec_less_than_half_the_pl/#more
BTW, Plecks is repping number “14″ next year!!!
After reading this article, you guys will certainly understand the meanin behid those retired numbers!

Just curious…any of my fellow posters here involved in the October 20 Sabres-Habs Habs I/O meet, greet and game? I’ll be there like white on rice.
August 19, 2007 at 9:56 am
What a disappointing off season, hope some young stud evolves out of the Montreal organization, or were gonna have a long wait. I see we have good depth, and people seem to think were 2 or 3 years away. I see a bunch of 3rd liners, chipchura prolly a 4th liner. I don’t see many top 6 forwards, if any, tank the next 2 years and get Tavares. Were in trouble.
August 19, 2007 at 1:51 pm
I agree and what make matters worse?,my doubts of head coach Carbo’s potential to even come close to pulling this off,”line-juggling, overly defencive, self centered, unproven and highly doubtful too pull it off sophomore!”It really reminds me of Mario Trembley’s attempt to be king.Carbo’s going to get so many players injured at the beginning of the season diving in-front of pucks and running into each other…..,well I really hope I’m wrong but if the Habs make it to the finals this year it will be another miracle on ice!Ido believe we are going to see a record amount of different players with the C.H. jersey this season and that will be all, sorry.
August 20, 2007 at 11:45 am
And as always bad mouthing the habs and staff even before the start of the season
August 21, 2007 at 10:09 am
well he is kinda right. we don’t have a number 1 guy. Koivu did his best last year but only 75 pts. kovalev used to play really good, but he doesn’t really care anymore. we need a 100 pts getter! OUR DEFENCE IS FINE!
August 21, 2007 at 4:57 pm
It’s hard to see other teams make moves while our team stays idle. Obviously we don’t see all the things that go on
behind the scenes. BUT, scoring has been an issue with this club for quite a while. I’m not saying that bashing the
players, coaches, and management before the season even begins is the right thing to do at this point in time. But
someone must be held accountable for this team’s performance. If we don’t have the players, (and right now, we
don’t) then it’s up to management to bring in better talent – like a good solid Center.
August 21, 2007 at 7:39 pm
I have followed Montreal since 1967 and I maybe wrong but with the addition of Patrice along with the new young guns, Koivu and a big year from Kovalev, get ready, this is the year.
August 21, 2007 at 10:39 pm
Hey guys, things could be worse. We could be Leafs fans. I’m still hoping that by some miracle, we end up with Selanne. Teemu, please don’t retire!
August 22, 2007 at 1:22 am
*************************BUZZ**********************************
Kovalev (tuesday) got into a motorcycle accident. based on the reports, injuries are not serious. He was driving Grande-Rivieres’ mayors’s motorcycle and got into an accident. It is believed he became a very good friend with the mayor after the accident. He showed some class by promising him to fix his bike and buying him a new one!!!!
I would love to see him show some class on ice!!!
August 22, 2007 at 11:55 am
Whats going on in Montreal? Isn’t it time to get a star there again? Don’t get me wrong….I’m a huge Habs fan…been so all my life….but people, wheres the glimmer of hope for us diehards…..wheres the player or two that make us fans say “ok, thats a good start”? Smolinski, Hamrlik, and Brisebois…..3 players out of their prime, AND who weren’t really much in their prime. So essentially what we have now in Montreal is the same team as last season…the same team who couldn’t make the playoffs then, and subtract Souray’s 20 plus goals this year. Really, it’s enough emphasis on “players who are good in the dressing room”….how about we try to get some players who are good on the ice…wins games and all that jazz. I really hope I eat my words and our beloved Habs have a great season…but of course, that would mean a team of average players geling like they did in 93, and thats a chance in a million in todays game. Sure the only player scoring any goals (Ryder), again this year is the last player signed AND it took going to arbitration to do so. Doesn’t something seem wrong with that? Whats the plan here….”we dont need goals because we’re gonna try to win all our games 1-0 and 2-1 with solid D and top-notch goaltending”? Not gonna happen….cuz we don’t have either. I know it’s a slow process of building, but it has been years now, very slow and seemingly still no building. I really can’t see any of these 3 acquisitions making any kind of impact on this years team, not where they need it anyway. I guess we’re still supposed to be waiting for the big breakout of Koivu…how many years has he been there now anyways?
August 22, 2007 at 12:28 pm
Rite-on,Donnie,rite-on!
August 22, 2007 at 2:07 pm
I can understand people being frustrated with this team, but I can’t take people bashing Koivu.
This guy is a warrior. Not only is he a class act, but he was able to come back from that eye injury
and from cancer. He did all this and played pretty well both times! I remember seeing his triumphant
return that playoff series against Boston – (after recovering from cancer) and watching him kick butt!
Living in Toronto, I’m always hearing Don Cherry talk about the rough and tough good ole’
Canadian boys. Non of whom have anything on this team’s captain.
Yes, there are problems with this team, but Koivu’s not one of them.
August 22, 2007 at 5:00 pm
I’m on the same page as you Jack Hab. I’m a big Koivu fan too.
August 23, 2007 at 4:09 pm
Brisebois can stay he can train those 500 dmen we picked up this summer. and Koivu can leave only if we get lecavalier , And its too soon to complain about what gainey’s trying to brew.
August 28, 2007 at 3:09 pm
Don’t get me wrong Jack Hab…..I like Koivu too…perseverance and balls is what he’s all about, this has been proven over and over again……I’m not bashing him, I’m just saying that he hasn’t lived up to the production numbers that he is capable of having. Lets face it, if the top guy on your team is averaging about 70 points a season, thats just not enough production. The problem then, is goals, we’re not scoring enough. I don’t know, maybe the Habs just haven’t found the right player to combine and gel with Koivu to up the production….but when your teams “star” can go cold for 10 games, then have 2 good games, then go cold for another 6 or 8, thats just not enough consistency or production….and thats what Koivu’s season have been like since he’s got there. I like the guy, he’s a great leader and captain, and he’s loved by all the Habs faithful…all I’m saying is that he’s gotta start doin it on the ice with his stick, instead of just in the dressing room with his attitude…can anyone really argue with that? Let’s go Saku !!!
August 28, 2007 at 4:27 pm
I can’t argue with that, Donnie. Your opinion above is pretty valid.
August 31, 2007 at 5:39 pm
You guys are right about Saku. Imagine if he could play with a player like Heatley !! It would be a nex team perspective and no one here would complain about the captain…
