Patrick Roy inducted to Hall of Fame
-
Tonight Patrick Roy will be inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame.
Roy’s roots run long and deep within the Canadiens organization.
What is your memory of Roy?
I will always remember the 1993 Playoffs when he dominated and back stopped the Habs to their last cup.

Does Roy’s #33 belong in the Bell Center’s rafters?

- Senet1 : Galchenyuk scores to back to back goals in shoot out to help USA win Bronze metal. I did not see the second goal but the first was a beauty.
- Senet1 : So we could pick anywhere from 25th to 23rd depending on who wins these quarter final series.
- Senet1 : First, is the 14 teams in the lottery. Then there are 12 teams that did not make the semi finals in the order of the seasonal finish, Then there are the four teams in the semi final the first two eliminated pick in the order of the regular season points total and the last two based on who wins and who loses the cup. So as it stand now if say Detroit beats Chicago then Detroit moves up to pick after us. Boston or NYR will move up and pick after us. LA or San Jose will move up and pick after us
- Senet1 : Basically, I was wrong about the draft pick situation. There are three groups of drafting teams within the 30 teams.
- Senet1 : seriously ready to challenge for the cup. He will us win games but he will not be the difference between winning the cup and not winning the cup. You pick up players like that once you have the team ready to challenge,.
- Senet1 : I am looking at the players to draft and there are a lot of big 6'3-6'5 forwards available ion the draft this year. If we could draft 3-4 big young players in the 2nd and 3rd round why would you want to give that up for a roster player who may have 2-3 years at best. If we are going to build a winner to have to build it with bigger players and there are a lot of good big players available this year. So you sign Ott and he is with us for the short run, but probably not when we are seriously re
- Senet1 : Boullion is a great mentor for the young D-men
- muller93 : Boullion is one of MBs great additions--Boull ion is a definite Keeper.
- muller93 : Getting rid of Kaberle frees up a lot of cash. Boullion is small but is reliable and doesn't back down from anyone.
- muller93 : Exactly Goalie any thoughts on a punishing D-man?
- goalie : They;re showing determination adn skill vs Ducks and Blackhawks.
- goalie : REd Wings could turn out to be the surprise team of this year's playoffs!
- goalie : WE need to rid our team of Kaberle and Webber. Step two would be to then move Diaz. If we get that big d-man I believe that would push Boullion to # 7 on the chart. We'd then go with Georges, PK,Markov (to continue mentoring Ememlin) Tinordi as our starting six . THEN I'd be excited about our chances. We could then work on getting bigger forwards.
- goalie : I too would gladly give up a 3rd round pick for Ott- the type of player we sadly lack. AND if we could get one more rugged, expeienced defenceman it would help immensely.
- muller93 : Senet what you are saying makes sense but if we can get Ott for a 3rd round I'll take that all day.
- muller93 : MB should be looking at a big D-man first, even though I like our blue line with the addition of Tinordi. We need that insurance just in case one gets injured. Also I'm a firm believer in starting with the goalie first then-defense-for wards-and we already have good goalie. We have all noticed when we have the lead Price is tough to beat.
- Senet1 : So sometimes you have to sacrifice for one year or two to build that team in the draft. then add the finishing touches through FA and trades.
- Senet1 : Muller, Detroit is another good example. They have been in the hunt every year with good well balanced teams yet only one or two cups to show for it. However, they have built a team that has a chance every years for the last 10+ years. That is what I think we have a chance to do this year with a good draft. It reminds me of the habs teams of the mid 80 and 90's we built a team then with sold draft picks and won the cup twice during that time period. So sometimes you have to sacrifice a one
- muller93 : Very true Senet, you do need luck and we haven't had any luck it seems since the habs moved to the Bell Center. We had an incredible run in 2010 with some crazy goal tending from Halak. With Galchenyuk-Tinor di-Gallagher all in 1 year--not too bad, even with an early exit in the playoffs.
- Senet1 : Muller I guess we all have our own ideas, but there has never been too many times that were successful when they traded their draft picks away. We have a chance to build this team so we have a shot at winning the cup over the next 10 years. Even as good as Pittsburgh has been they have only won the cup once since Crosby and Malkin have been with the team. That is because you not only need great players but you need luck to win, but one thing about Pittsburgh they have a chance every year. The
- muller93 : Good point on Torres, he might be a liability. Torres has to tone it down a bit, but that's his game-very aggressive.
- goalie : Though I don't condone what Raffi Torres did - thos shows you how repeat offenders or near offenders are going to be treated. His hit was NOT illegal BUT what the rap sheet adn reputation Torres has he got severly punished. Lesson to be learned by OTHER players because Torres dopesn't learn fromk his mistakes.
- muller93 : Senet normally I would agree with you on not trading draft picks but we are not in a rebuilding stage. Sometimes draft picks can be a roll of the dice and it can take up to 3 years to be NHL ready. We have a good team and I agree with Stuo players like Clowe-Torres-Ott -Scott will make a big difference. Somebody has to protect Gallagher, he can't keep getting hit the way does--we need a tough forward so they think twice before going after Gallagher.
- Senet1 : Really a heathly Habs team would probably win more games against the Pens that we did against the Sens. Reason they Pens would not play as physical against us as against the Sens. If we get good goaltending we win at least two games.
- zpezada4ok : hello all «link»
- stuo11 : hes a tougher big guy too! Just a minor adjustment but will help a bit
- stuo11 : hes better than markov, and hes french who was in mention for defenceman of the year
- goalie : Markov for Beauchemin - an injury prone d-man for an ;old timer'd-man. Beauchemin is NOT what the Habs need in my opinion. He is a HUGE defensive liability.
- goalie : Stuo 11 I'd make that trade with Oilers fast BUT I doubt the Oilers will make that. Two marginal d-men at the best for a switch of first round picks - not a chance .
- stuo11 : markov for beachemin?
- stuo11 : let moen go
- stuo11 : maybe try and get steve begin back
- stuo11 : we wouldve kicked out all other teams but pens, sens,
- stuo11 : pens have alot of forwaRDS same with us but we have better goaltending
- stuo11 : theres styles of play goalie. Sens played us good, but lost games to southeast teams florida and tampa and get crushed by leafs EVERYTIME. sens and leafsd cant beat bruins but we do frequently

I love the player but the reason why he has been so vocal lately? I dont know.
I think its up to him if he wants to see 33 retired in Montreal. He definitely deserves it.
November 13, 2006 at 4:25 pm
Arguably one of the greatest “money goalies” ever, he deserves to be inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame.
He is a love-him-or-hate-him kind of guy (loved when he was a Hab, hated him as an Av.), a fierce competitor with a giant chip on his shoulder, but he has done more than enough to earn that right.
I’ll always remember that play-off series that he played against the Bruins with appendicitis…what a competitor.
Congrats, Patrick!

I remeber in 1986, just a youing kid, watching the Habs and this young kid win the stanley Cup. My Memories of Roy stem for that point. He was a constant through out the years of watching the HAbs. If the team was down you always felt like you had a chance with St. Patrick in the net.
The organization needs to get their heads on right and retire the 33 jersey. Roy is an indelible Habs legend that deserves the honour…
November 13, 2006 at 5:32 pm
A fierless competitor! It’s because of him that kids today dream of becoming a goalie in the nhl. We should have never traded him…
November 13, 2006 at 5:39 pm
Yes he deserves the Hall of Fame, not sold on having his jersey retired yet.
For the Ottawa-Montreal game tonight:Montreal Canadiens:
Projected lineup vs. Ottawa
Forwards:
Latendresse – Koivu – Ryder
Kostitsyn – Kovalev – Samsonov
Perezhogin – Bonk – Johnson
Begin – Plekanec – Downey
Defence:
Souray – Rivet
Komisarek – Markov
Niinimaa – Streit
Goal:
Huet
Notes: The Habs changed lines a little by inserting Andrei Kostitsyn on the wing on the second unit and bumping down Alexander Perezhogin to the third and Steve Begin to the fourth. Garth Murray is a healthy scratch. – TSN
Montreal Canadiens: Forward Alexei Kovalev has taken some time off of practicing due to a sore right knee. It’s not like I’m going to need surgery or anything like that,” he said. – Montreal Gazette

The best there is, the best there was, the best there ever will be
There will never be another Patrick Roy in our lifetime.
The greatest money goalie EVER!
I’ll always remember that game against the Rangers in 1986,
Simply put amazing!
Raise the number to the banners
Hail #33
Thank you for all the memories and the bragging rights till this day.
1993 the last Canadian Team to win the Cup
November 13, 2006 at 8:32 pm
Patrick Roy will go down in history as one of the best goalies of all time.He certainly was a great clutch goalie. When he was with the habs and they were having an off night offensively, you could always count on Patrick, to either either bail them out, or to keep them in the game. we wouldn’t have won the cup in either 1986, or 1993, if it weren’t for #33. It was unfortunate how he left Montreal in such a tragic manner. I will never forget his last game for the habs. I can recall watching the game, a game in which the habs were being punished by the wings. Roy had let in 6 goals, and coach Mario Tremblay refused to give Roy the hook. he left roy in to be embarrassed! I think there must have been some feuding between the two, because you just don’t do that to an all star goalie. In a huff, Roy stormed off the ice, gave a dirty look to Tremblay, and went over to Cory and told him:”this is the last game I play for the habs”! sad for him to go like that. It somewhat tainted such a brilliant career he had for the habs. he deserved a better fate, and certainly better treatment.Canadiens organization should have tried harder to work things out, so as to come to a more amicable resolve. He should have ended his career in Montreal, not Colorado!
November 13, 2006 at 9:29 pm
@ fanatic
here! here! buddy! You could not have summed it up better…Roy should have played out his whole carrear here..and Tremblay should have been hung out to dry !
December 2nd 1995 will go down in history as BLACK TUESDAY;”The day a city turned it’s back on…and lost,a legend”
Go Habs Go!

Can anyone tell St-Patrick that Latendresse touched the puck tonight? (twice)
November 14, 2006 at 12:03 am
Listen folks,
this Patrick Roy guy is kind of our enemy. Did you guys know: whenever Colorado played us and they wouldve won, Roy would pay not only pay for the entire team but everyone that atteined any restaurant Roy prefered to go to after the would win a game against MOntreal.
November 14, 2006 at 12:12 am
JT, all players do that when they play their former team. Brisebois and Theodore did it this year and Lupul’s done it when the Oilers have played the Ducks.
1st star:Cristobal Huet
2nd star:Guillaume Latendresse (All hail the great Guillaume)
3rd star:The entire third line.
Perezhogin looks a lot more comfortable on the third line with Bonk and Johnson then he ever did with Kovalev and Samsonov. Keep Kotstitsyn up with them. And Huet ran with his chance after Aebischers play on Saturday. He’ll play aginst Tampa, then Aebischer against Florida cause it’s back to back nights.
Good win and a nice rebound for the Habs going down to florida were they’ve never played well. Although they were outshot again and their penalty problems flared up in the third and almost cost them the game. Will someone tell Ninnamaa to shut his mouth and not yap at the refs.
AND IS GERBER BAD OR WHAT. ANOTHER MUCKLER SRCREW UP. LIKE KEEPING ALFREDSSON OVER HAVLAT AND HOSSA.
November 14, 2006 at 1:22 am
ROY =
Amazing goalie
Great competitor
Ego driven human being
November 14, 2006 at 2:01 am
Man you gotta love that Bonk and his third line.
I never thought I would say that. He has really be excellent in all situations.
Kotstitsyn played with a lot passion and desire. Well done kid.
Now that’s the Guillaume I remember watching in the Q.
Expect big changes from Philly and Ottawa in the next 24 hours.
I hope we can get in the Gagne / Forsberg / Lecavalier sweepstakes.
Forsberg / Lecavalier + Montreal = Stanley Cup
We really need that #1 centre
I’ll say it again Chris Higgins will centre Samsonov and Kovalev upon his return.

My memory of Roy?
Arrogant *****!
You asked…
November 14, 2006 at 9:19 am
It’s simply not arrogance, If you can back it up!
November 14, 2006 at 12:15 pm
Patrick Roy.
Lingering memories:
-That OT in the ’86 playoffs against the Rangers. Unbelievable saves.
-The whole ’93 run with the 10 OT wins.
-Waking up in the ’94 playoffs and seeing the headline in the Toronto Star “HABS’ ROY FELLED BY APPENDICITIS” and he played the next game.
-The bullshit involving Tremblay and Corey that ugly night against Detroit. They didn’t have to trade him, Tremblay’s ego wanted him traded and Houle and Corey actually agreed! Any sane front office types would’ve let it cool down and probably would’ve fired the coach for such an assinine move as embarrassing the team’s superstar (Roy was our Gretzky, our Lemieux, our Yzerman!) to satisfy his war of egos (in most cases, in a war of egos, the coach takes the fall BUT NOT WITH THESE IDIOTS).
The maddening part is the trade was so one sided as Houle even threw in team captain Mike Keane! For what? Rucinsky, Kovalenko and Thibault!!!! At least get Sakic or Forsberg for Roy. DUMB. DUMB.
So yeah, arrogant and egotistical but also fiery (in the Rocket mold) and extremely competitive and driven, Patrick Roy should have his number 33 retired here ASAP (before the Avalanche steal the thunder). And hopefully someday St. Patrick winds up coaching or managing this franchise cuz he never ever loses.
November 14, 2006 at 12:20 pm
Agreed there will never be another patrick. He will always be a hab in my heart
November 14, 2006 at 2:32 pm
I bet all the people ranking on Roy now are wishing for the glory days of Mario Tremblay coaching us to the cup, and Houle making those blockbuster trades we benefitted from so much *cough*cough*. The habs would be so much of a better organization if those 2 were ejected from the organization then… and not a decade later. I’m sorry when were the last times we won a cup, and who backstopped us to them. Sure as hell wasn’t the coaching or management staff. Talk about arrogant pricks. Lbackstopping the Habs to 2 cups is reason enough to get his number retired.
November 14, 2006 at 3:40 pm
Well, without getting into a schoolyard *****-slap here, my opinion was based based solely on my “immediate” memory of Roy. The post made no mention of my disgust of Houle and Tremblay’s tenure. By tacking this onto a reply to my opinion, automatically assumes that one equates “arrogant Roy” = “approval of Houle & Tremblay”. This is a pure example of many of the posts i see here based purely on impulse and childish impetiousness.
“It’s simply not arrogance, If you can back it up!”
I’ve heard that before… and the statement still makes no sense to any logical person. Sure, he was a winner and of that there’s no dispute. But alas, he’s still arrogant, no? Look, Lafleur was just as revered, but when he and Bowman where at odds, i don’t remember Guy getting in the bosses face to demand a trade on national television. In the end, Roy did regret doing this as he has recently stated that, at the time, he was hoping the incident would cool down after a day or so and he and management would iron things out. So, like any company would’ve done, they fired his *** like any other employee who thinks he’s bigger than the company he works for.
As for Roy winning in Colorado. It was just a matter of another year or two that they’d win a cup… even without him. The ave’s line-up was a dream team at the time anyway. This notion that he was the saviour is bunk. He just brought it on a little earlier because, YES, he WAS a winner. He just wasn’t humble.
November 14, 2006 at 6:41 pm
@ Gumper
“It’s simply not arrogance, If you can back it up!
Leet me clarify that for you…The above statement simply means that one sees arrogance as simple arrogance when someone is simply cocky and ARROGANT!!
But,(AND ESPECIALLY IN PROFESSIONAL SPORT)when someone is cocky and or arrogant in reference to their own physical prowess or ability and they ARE ACTUALLY THAT GOOD. The line is drawn and this becomes what’s known as CONFIDENCE..not to be confused with overly confident..because in this case that also would not apply!!
Is it arrogant to go in the dressing room and say “they won’t score another goal on me tonight! just get one and we win?!?” The picture on the top of this blog says it all !
Patrick Roy Was AWESOME,maybe not modest!..But Truely awesome!!
