Sheldon Souray Contract Offer
-
The Canadiens made their first official contract offer to Sheldon Souray.
By the comments of Sheldon’s agent it doesn’t look like it was anything that shocked them.
“We got the offer,” he told the paper. “It’s May, late May, but it’s still early, and we’re just going to sit here and evaluate Sheldon’s free-agent options over the next couple of weeks.”
By the sounds of it, it seems they intend to test the market as most everyone expected.
If that’s the case then Sheldon Souray will have been lost for nothing, in a year the Habs didn’t even qualify for the playoffs.

- Avatar37 : pressure playing in Montreal, since he has problems with the expectations in Washington and Montreal isn't any easier. Then again, the media were very easy on Kovalev, so maybe it's a Russian thing? No idea. Anyway, yeah, it would have to be an established star that gives us an immediate drastic upgrade at forward, that's the only way I'd trade PK, because we'd be giving up a potential QB on our blueline for the next decade.
- Avatar37 : Goalie - Sure, the only player I'd say who is untradeable (meaning I wouldn't trade no matter what) is Carey Price. You build a winning team from the net out, and I don't think there's a better goalie for his age in the NHL than Price, so I wouldn't trade him. Otherwise, every player would be open for offers, but for PK Subban, it would take (for me) an already established star, like Carter or Crosby or Ovechkin. As much as I like Ovechkin, I'm not sure he could handle all the media pre
- goalie : I'm not suggesting at all that we judst dump or get rid of PK. I do however believe that he is a very valued commodity in the NHL adn that the Habs will receive offers for his services. If someone ffers us young, strong, puck handling forwards who can score, I think the Habs have to look at that possible trade.
- Avatar37 : Agreed. It would be a big mistake to trade PK just to move up 2 spots in the draft. PK, Emelin, and Gorges are the bright future of our defense.
- Senet1 : I am with you Avatar, Subban stays, it is not often that you get a stud defenceman who can play 25+ minutes. The mistakes he makes are for the most part not that serious and people forget he is only 23 and been in the league 2 years. He has come a long way in those two years. He has offense, defence and he hits. You cannot bet much better than that. Two more years experience and he has a shot at the Norris. If Markov does anything I hope he teaches PK how to work the PP.
- Avatar37 : «link»
- Avatar37 : go.
- Avatar37 : round exit. Heck, even the year they won the cup we almost took them out in round 1. I believe in the corps of this team, I really think we just need a few tweaks. Adding Larry Robinson to run the defense would be a BIG help, keep Cunneyworth as offensive coach, and get a head coach who can get these guys back on the right path. We need to establish an identity again, a team that won't let itself be pushed around like it was under Martin. A few scrappers on this team and we'll be good to
- Avatar37 : Yeah, the only way I'd trade PK is if we were getting an established star in return, like Carter or Crosby. I don't think we're miles away from competing deep into the playoffs, the NHL has become so competitive because of the salary cap that really there aren't huge differences between the teams. Add into the equation the stupid scoring system (some games worth 2 points, some 3) that the standings don't truly reflect where teams should really be. Look at Boston, cup winners to first rou
- Senet1 : It would have to be something pretty special before I would trade PK. To me he is the #1 building block of our defence. I would trade any other defenceman we have before I would trade PK.
- Senet1 : An improvement in our offense and strengthening our defence. Personally, I do not think we are that far off, five players at best could get us there. One thing that has always been true about the playoffs, Defence wins and you need a strong 3rd and 4th line.
- goalie : I'm more optimistic now about the Habs than I have been for the past three dreadfully long seasons!
- goalie : 2: I think GM Bergevin will make somewhat of a 'blockbuster't rade either before or on the day of the draft adn I believe PK Subban will be in that package. WE have t rememebr we have to give away some talent to get back other talent. No one wants players like Moen to move up in the draft etc.
- goalie : Some thoughts:The more I see the playoffs it becomes even more obvious that we're miles away from being able to 'compete' dep into the playoffs
- Avatar37 : «link»
- Senet1 : Young Subban might also be an option if the Russian goalie is not available. However, to me I would wait another year and attempt to use my draft 2nd round draft picks to improve out forward situation.
- Senet1 : Although Rinne contact is another example of long term at the wrong time. He is 29 years old. A case could be made with Price that double his money now with bonuses if we win the cup, I think that is still allowed in contracts?
- Senet1 : Problem is he is going to want Pekka Rinne money and term. That is closer to 7M. On the other hand, the contract could have step up clauses in it over the 7 years.
- Avatar37 : With Price, I wouldn't blink twice about offering him a 7 year contract now, especially if he'd be willing to give up dollar value for length. 7 years at $5.5 million a year would be just fine in my book.
- Avatar37 : I think the goaltending void in our current system would push me to draft Vasilevski with our second pick, if he was available. He's young and has lots of potential, but is at least 5-6 years away from starting to be ready to play on an NHL roster.
- Senet1 : Long tern contracts are a risk, but if you have a super star not as much. Luongo's contract was long term but signed too late in his career.
- Avatar37 : Senet - Yes, you were clear in your post, my question was directed at goalie. I'm with you in that I'd be willing to sign him to a 7 year contract. I'd be nervous about anything longer, because every single long term goalie contract I can think of turned out to be a disaster for the team signing it.
- Senet1 : I think that Budaj is a better goalie than many give him credit for, is he a Price no but with a tight defence he could be a good goalie. Many teams have average goalies but have great defence and still win. Look at Detroit, for years they have had average goaltending, but won cups. Goalies can get on a roll in the playoffs, look at Huet as an example, he was not really a good goalie but played great in the playoffs, next year he was a wash. Defence makes the goalie a winner, just ask Price.
- Senet1 : Having a young equivalent goalie in the system right now is not important, three years from now it will be, so we have three years to make that kind of move in the draft. I think we have more pressing needs aat the moment.
- Senet1 : Personally, I do not see this as a negative because of Price's age, you wait to draft a goalie of a Patrick Roy or Brodeur some teams wait a life time. To me we have on so why would we want to not play that out for as long as we can. Bottom line is this, regardless, right now you have a stud goalie, you are either going to pay him the money he deserves for not sign him and lose him. There is no middle of the road here.
- goalie : Avatar made a great point. We don't have an NHL or up adn coming NHL goalies in our system. Another great move by Gauthier. Price is sitting very pretty.
- goalie : WEll Price has us by the nads. I guess I'd have to go as far as a 7 year contract due to his play adn his age.
- Senet1 : Luongo is now 33, he has been a good goaltender for a number of years. I would sign Price for 7 years and at age 31 then we deal with UFA at that time. Hopefully, we could provide him with another 5 years at that time. That is my opinion anyway, I would never risk losing him as a UFA at this point in his career to me that would be a very poor management decision. Even a 10 year contract would put him only at 34 years old. If you are going to sign him to long term now is the time.
- Senet1 : If you have a young stud you have to gamble a little and give him a contract that is worthy of his abilities and his potential. It can have escalation clauses or reducing clauses like Kovalchuk's contract.
- Senet1 : Avatar, I thought I was clear Yes I would sign him long term. My previous post said. The problem is if you have a out in the contract after 5 years then the player also has an out after 5 years. So no self respected lawyer would accept a contract that did not have equal escape clauses. So no I would not sign only for 5 years, if Price was 28 years old yes but not a 24. Seven years still only makes him 31 when the contract is over. If you have a young stud you have to gamble a little and give him
- Avatar37 : Cammalleri trade. Given the fact that we have no NHL starting quality goaltenders in the system currently, aren't we held hostage to having to sign Price?
- Avatar37 : There are many bad goalie contracts, just look at Huet. However, your post didn't answer my question as to what you'd do with Price. He's an RFA now, but for argument sake, if he were a UFA, what would you do? If he wanted a 7+ year contract, you know some other team would give him one. Would you risk losing him for nothing because you didn't want to sign a contract over 5 years? And if we lose Price, our goalies are Budaj and Robert Mayer, as we sent Karri Ramo to the Flames in the Cam
- goalie : .. a 5 years contract again based upon the experience he has had AND he likes Bobby Lou!
- goalie : Ditto for Philly, Ther goaltender 'situations' have both become the number 1 story line for both teams, and in Vancouver one could see the exaspiration on Gillis' adn to some extent Vigneault's faces when continously being bombarded by the loooong term contract that the Canucks are stuct with. (Gillis even said last February or so, thank goodness it looks like more than few other teams will be looking for a starting goaltender for 2012-13. He said he would never again do more than a 5 year c
- goalie : I've spent the past four winters in BC thus I am very aware of the Canucks situations. I'd first say I give Gillis adn Vigneault 100% credit for being VERY supportive of Roberto L. even when Corey Schenider has vastly out played him. (I too like Bobby Lou but facts are facts).

He is a bit heavier now though
June 13, 2007 at 5:12 pm
WOW JOSHTM, your lack of habs knowledge is upsetting. Price not big? HE IS HUGE!!!!! HE is Giguere like size. HE IS A MONSTER. Get your facts straight buddy.
ANd wha tis this about being too old in 4 years. What are you mumbling about. Come by Stoney and I will straighten you out little boy.
June 13, 2007 at 6:09 pm
He is listed as 212lbs on tsn, but when roland melanson was talking about him, he described him as exactly what i wrote. 6’3″, 225lbs. like snake said, HUGE.
June 13, 2007 at 6:16 pm
When you have the likes of Getzlaf and Pronger blitzing the net, 225 lbs is peanuts. And worst still when you have Markov blitzing the net too to knock over his own goalie, and throw in Dandenault and Bouillon tag teaming against the habs goalie when Markov is not on the ice, heck Montreal doesn’t need anyone blitzing their own net, not when your own defense is murdering its own goalie….I’ll give Price at least four games before the combination of Markov, Dandenault and Bouillon assassinate Price.
But amongst you mental midgets anyone over six feet is a giant. But hey look at the minch meat they routinely make of Johnson who has almost the same dimensions and weight, heck he’s nothing, he gets knocked around like he’s a feather out there….or even Ninnima, who is another rag doll yet has size and a bit of weight but, do these pricks know how to use that to their advantage? No.
Hey Snake missed your great wit and sarcasm. So what do you think of Esposito and others who are showing their stuff at the pre-draft workouts at the Habs gym? No wonder we seem to draft small players, it’s sad when you have an insecure recruiter like Trevor Timmins, who is a midget, of course being insecure he aint gonna go after size….its time Montreal got some real hockey players as recruiters and GMs and Coaches, enough of these platform wearing polyester cowboy wannabees we seem to be stuck with lately….like Crazy Bob and One Arm Bandit Guy….it makes sense now.
And come to think of it, all you jerks out there who think Bob is doing great support the smaller acquisitions of late….if you are a small loser, of course you associate with other small losers…no wonder. It makes sense now. Bob Gainey, king of the one eyed midget Habs fans…..
June 13, 2007 at 6:25 pm
Joshtm, if you’re using Dryden as you’re size example, consider that he was 15 pounds lighter than Price, while being 1 inch taller. While I’m sure any rational person could deduce that this proves Price is actually more heavily built than Dryden, I’ll bet it twists your panties into a tight little bunch. I understand this whole concept of FACT is difficult for you to comprehend, but i’m going to throw this out for you anyways.
June 13, 2007 at 7:20 pm
Hey JOsh;
If Gainey trades up to get Esposito and then spends all of cap space to sign Kariya then I will agree with you. But if he signs a playe rlike Hartnell and drafts a big rugged d man I expect you to chill out.
p.s can you bring my a carton of players?
June 13, 2007 at 8:13 pm
If gainey signs Yashin or another soft, past there best before date ufa, i’m going to puke. If i could pick any player that would be the last thing we need it would probably be yashin, and i don’t really care what he did a decade ago. if we sign Yashin Joshtm may be right when he says montreal is a retirement home for over the hill former stars, or was it broke down vets.
June 13, 2007 at 9:30 pm
I would trade Price for Lecavalier. Even though he might be great, it might come back to haunt us. There’s no guarantee he’ll be a great (Patrick Roy) type of player. Lecavalier would be bring his goal scoring touch, which would impact the team right away. The pressure would be off Koivu and he’ll probably have even better success.
Lastly, the Habs could kept the goaltending duo they have now and shop for a goalie in 2/3 yrs.
Did I say that Vinny would score 50/60 goals for the next 5-6 seasons and this alone might encourage other Canadian born players to come here (e.g. Sid the Kid)…
June 13, 2007 at 10:15 pm
Which scenerio would you be the most pleased with after free agency
a) We sign Ian Lapierre, wes walz and resign Souray.
b) We sign Timonnen and Yashin and Sammy stays.
c) Souray resigns and we sign Hartnell
d) We acquire Brad richards through trade for draft picks but dont sign anyone
e) We sign Hannan, schneider but no forwards.
f) We sign Bertuzzi and resign souray
g) The habs acquire Mother Joshtm to serve pink lemonade at the games.
June 13, 2007 at 10:37 pm
Josh, you might have your bone to pick with Gainey for some bad moves (even thought the good outweigh the bad) don’t you DARE say anything about Trevore Timmins!!! He is a god!
June 13, 2007 at 11:23 pm
Post 209
G is my final answer.
I heart pink lemonade…. maybe samsonov, kovalev and yashin can help her out? More work then what their doing on the ice anyway.

Hamiltons looking good with new prospects…
June 14, 2007 at 5:19 pm
I’d prefer scenario e). The last one is a solid choice to.
Thank god Valentenko is under contract now. With him, Carle, Fischer and O’Byrne coming up the habs will have one of the best D’s in the league in front of Price. Up next is Emelin hopefully.
And I have a feeling the Habs are going to make a serious pitch for Marleau at the draft. Let’s say one of the two 1rst round picks, Grabovski, Dandenault(they are desperet for veteran dmen apparently) and a couple more draft picks. Marleau could very well be slipping on a Habs jersey next weekend. Drury wants to go to San Jose so they chose Thornton over Marleau.
June 14, 2007 at 9:52 pm
Let Sheldon Souray leave Habs. Souray is a good blue liner, but he is also the rust of Habs. He sometimes has no morale. You know what I mean.
Think about ZDENO CHARA, another blue liner. He left Ottawa, but then Ottawa played better and better.

Some of you have great ideas to help the team, others have some ideas that, at best, aren’t terribly realistic. But it’s good to see fans getting back into the swing of things leading up to the draft next weekend.
Speaking of next weekends’s draft, we should have a live blog or specific thread set up specifically for the day’s mutterings. With any luck, it will be more eventful than last year’s draft, which featured few trades, and even fewer surprises. For our team certainly, and on a league wide basis also.
Leading up to that, let’s all come up with our wish list/predictions for next Saturday, and post them prior to that. After it’s all said and done, we can discuss who was right, who was way off, who SHOULD have been right, and what not, over pink lemonade.
Myself, I’ll be posting my ideas once I have a chance to look at central scouting and some other sites–so likely by the end of the weekend.
Let the bear-baiting begin!

This is for those of you that do not believe Saku does not have the make-up of a captain. As voted by the players I believe…cough cough (Joshtm) Old Mister hook himself…LOL
June 15, 2007 at 1:09 pm
Wow, I guess above double negative first sentence is saying the opposite of my intent:
should read;
“This is for those of you that believe Saku does not have the make-up of a captain.”

higgy and komi re-signed for 2 more years each.
June 15, 2007 at 6:30 pm
Both signed for 1.5 mil.this season and 1.9 mil. for the following season….with Valentenko signed and Emelin almost signed its good too see the Habs continue to build within.
June 15, 2007 at 7:31 pm
Hey Joshtm;
Both Komi and Higgy for two years signed. Both bargain prices. Lets hear it for Gainey. ALso he got it done fast which means come free agency we know were we sit. Excellent job Gainey. Just Plekanec and Ferland are RFA’s left. Plek at 1.2 and Ferland well league minimum if he wants to stay.
June 15, 2007 at 7:37 pm

I was fortunate enough to be present when Higgs and Komi signed their contract. They did it immediately after a hard work-out, both sweating and totally committed. Look for them to not only live up to their contract, but exceed it..No BSing around for those boys..

breaking news sergei samsonov traded to blackhawks for jason collimore and tony salmelainen. it also says that the habs will probably buy out jason collimore’s contract which i’m sure is cheaper than samsonov. this is great news for habs fans now we have more money to pick up key free agents we need

Bye Bye Sergi…and headlines for first week of July “Bye Bye Sheldon”. It’s pretty obvious Shelly’s thinking “show me the money Mr. McGuire!” However much the habs offered him, it’s about 1 mil/yr less than L.A./Anaheim/San Jose will offer, and he’ll take the California sunshining offer and smile. I think being in those commercials on TV during the hoopla of the All Star game put a little Hollywood in his head.
On a better note…just how good is Price gonna be? How about this for open comment…headlines about 20+ years from now…”Habs retire netminder Price’s number and are known for having undoubtedly the 2 best goalies in hockey history.” Could he be that good? Remember when Patrick was in his rookie year? What did he do but single handedly win us the cup!!! And who did he have around him…some solid defence and a handful of 25+ scorers and 70+ pointers. No Crosbys/Prongers/LeCavaliers…it’s a team effort and if Sheldon wants out for more money, just replace him with someone proven. If you’re looking for a Lidstrom, ya ain’t gonna find it. Besides..let these tallented young guys show what they can do. The habs have enough question marks as far as young players…they can play but will they show-the-hell-up? Give em a true shot this year and let the cream rise to the top.
June 18, 2007 at 2:56 pm
With the buyout of Cullimore’s contract, this will free up dollars for Souray!
July 3, 2007 at 6:17 pm
i would rather have souray over markov anyday…..markov is more of a defensive defencemen but souray shot is to important on the powerplay….even the goals scored on the powerplay that souray didnt get mostly only happened because the other team focuses on souray….
5.5 mil? no doubt….id give him 12mill over two yrs.
July 14, 2007 at 10:51 pm
Just what we need …a Radik Bonk on defense…aka Roman Hamrlik..or whatever
