Sheldon Souray Contract Offer

  • The Canadiens made their first official contract offer to Sheldon Souray.

By the comments of Sheldon’s agent it doesn’t look like it was anything that shocked them.

“We got the offer,” he told the paper. “It’s May, late May, but it’s still early, and we’re just going to sit here and evaluate Sheldon’s free-agent options over the next couple of weeks.”

By the sounds of it, it seems they intend to test the market as most everyone expected.

If that’s the case then Sheldon Souray will have been lost for nothing, in a year the Habs didn’t even qualify for the playoffs.

I see the perverts who are proven wrong about how great Crazy Bob is, are relegated to being the true arseholes they really are. So we want to get rid of one of our higher scoring players? Who’s next, Ryder? And yet you just love little Sakku and his lack of leadership….and yet you hate the true leader of the team Souray? What gives? Oh wait, I forgot I stumbled on the St.Catherine’s St chapter of fags who adore little Finnish hockey players!

hahaha! joshtm, i think you should look over your post, first you say that montreal has to stop trading it’s leading scorers and than you start bashing koivu. Guess who lead our team in scoring this year. A little finnish player named Saku Koivu. He got 75 points!! Lecavalier, the player everybody wants got 75 points in 2005-2006 and we wanted to trade FOR him. Not trade him away. So give Saku a break. I would hate to make $4 plus dollars in montreal because it’s hell on earth. Somwhow Saku still wants to play in montreal despite idiots like you bashing him constantly. Get a life.

How about this one? Souray and Huet to Ottawa for that great combo of Phillips and Emery, and then Dandenault ahd Bouillon could have competition for most goals against….You can bet the Sens are gonna shop Emery and Phillips around after tonites performance. Watch, Gainey will go for that one maybe. Heck we couldn’t do worse, oh wait we already have, we still have Dandenault and Bouillon….

Hey Habs4Life has a very selective view of history that is for sure! Well in spite of little Sakku’s team leading points, guess what little Sakku also led in? Losing the most games single handedly, I guess people forget all those games where the habs had the lead only to have little Sakku hook someone and turn a powerplay by the Habs into a short handed loss for the habs! Or that horrible slump from January to March where little Sakku racked up what, the fifth most penalties on the Habs and cost the Habs their sure spot in the playoffs? And we thank Sakku for that? That is being a team leader in losing, LOSER!!! that is what Sakku is, no wonder he was worried that Gainey would re-build and kick little Sakku out for costing the Habs a spot! I always say give credit where credit is due, maybe Souray and Koivu to the Sens for Emery and Phillips, since Gainey is not about signing winners….oh wait, we should keep little Sakku, cause then he would compete not only with Dandenault and Bouillon on giving away a game, but Emery and Phillips could score a goal against their own team just when it counts the most, and then little Sakku could turn a power play into a shorthanded loss like his great “specialty”….HAHAHAHAAA!!!!! CLAP!!! CLAP!!! CLAP!!!! Three cheers for Sakku!!! He cost us a spot in the playoffs!!!!! HIP HIP HOORAY!!!!!!

  7. Habsfan-4-life, Saku’s wish is to be traded instead of going through another rebuilding faze, being that he’s 34 year old and wants to be on a winner,I don’t have a problem with that ,do you ? Cause the facts are the Habs have to rebuild again and with size, youth, speed, talent and heart…and thats going to take a couple of years unfortunitly for all of us. Now is the time to free Saku and let him seek his destany,we all owe him that much for all he’s done and every thing he’s given, don’t you think? On the plus side we can get some great trade action out of it and get someone a little younger and bigger and save payrole.

Well said X-Habs, I agree. Sakku has worked hard all these years, and I shouldn’t crap on him for having heart, which he has. But it bugs me when people like Pactum who lives in the corner of Habsblog and never goes home, thinks he owns the Bell centre….what, because I am a Habs fan and I want them to win, that by criticizing what are obvious moves that will cost the Habs another year of roller coaster hockey, that I am bashing? And then he talks of controlling? Geeze Pactum, that speaks of a time long gone.

Anyway, Sakku is being wasted on the Habs. His style does not match the Habs. And Gainey has never got Sakku a goon to look after him. Sakku is loved that is for sure, but not by me because of his really bad year. What is the use of getting all those points and then think just because he got all those points that gives Sakku the right to get stupid penalties?

Its a team. Unfortunately, right now it looks like Gainey is going small. He is thinking like a minor league coach. Really bad moves. The reality is fast skaters don’t amount to much in the NHL now. Unless they have size and weight to add to that.

It would be a mistake to get rid of Souray though, unless we got replacement to Sheldon that has both size, speed and scoring ability. If it is not broken why fix it?

Anyway, so far we don’t have any size, and what size there is, is stuck in Hamilton and it’s not exactly NHL caliber yet, either in weight or nasti-ness.

There are cheaper, bigger, faster defensemen out there, there is no need to have small pint sized defense like Bouillon and Dandenault, honestly, and there are others who would love to come to Montreal and play with the up and coming rookie goalies.

There is such a promise. That is what pisses me off so much. So much promise and yet it is being wasted because we have a bunch of broken down old veterans who are not good team players anymore, Sakku included, and yet you have these rookies who can propel us close to the Cup. If we stick with the bunch we have now, there is only the promise of another season where we get so close to a playoff spot only to peter out at the end of the season like we did.

Why sign players who are not going to fit in with the Habs concept? Unless you totally re-build. Right now the Habs are a misfit, none of the lines fit each other, except for the rookies who are used to playing with each other anyway.

That is sad, especially since Sakku, Alexei, and others have been on the habs going on over three years. And the new old guys can’t fit in. Honestly.

  11. So Pactum Serva wants THE VIEWPIONTS OF HAB FANS SCREENED !Let’s allso rename it to …BORG BLOG for sheepish ,butt sniffing Habs fans with no balls! And while were at it let’s throw out the Canadian constatution and freedom of speech that alot of people fought and died for. First off if Gainey sends down Lats it will be beacuse he is a HORRIBLE SKATER. His job is to hit not attempt to score. He is a horrible playmaker and has no speed. HE has midget B caliber speed. HOwever if he hits and plays a 4th line role he can be effective. BUT NOTHING MORE. AND if LAps cannot improve his shot then he will be a AHLer for LIFE.

The LEafs signed Nik Antropov of all people to a 2 year deal. HAHAHHAHAHHAHAHA. WHat A joke. YOu thin kthat franchise would finally try to rectify itself. JFJ is a joke. Antropov skates worse then LAts.

P.S HEy JOSHTM I bought you tickets to the LEafs 50th anniversary of their last cup part on June9th 2017. You should enjoy yourself. IT will be full of losers.

    LEAFS SUCK!!!!!!!!!

  14. Joshtm, everyone makes fun of you because it seems that all you do is constantly repeat yourself, and bash the habs. Once in a while, it wouldn’t hurt to say something nice about the team this website supports.
And while having Habs Blog censor our comments isn’t the answer, we should all probably be a little more considerate when we are posting. This isn’t a junior high chat room, and everyone is entitled to their opinion. they shouldn’t be ridiculed for voicing that opinion. I don’t mind seeing healthy debate, it can be informative and entertaining, but let’s cut the childish bickering.

  15. I will start out by talking about another topic here and wish the Anaheim Ducks congratulartions as they dominated the Sens and won the cup last night. That was total domination on the part of the ducks. They beat up the Sens and I think it was good for them. Some of you people on this site actually wanted the Sens to lose because you were saying that you did not want a Canadian team to win the cup before Montreal. Well, I hope Montreal can win it soon because I do not want this Canadian cup drought to last much longer. It has been 14 years since a Canadian team won the cup(our beloved Habs were the ones that got it done and made Canada proud) so I think it would be only fitting that if any Canadian team is going to end Canada’s cup drought, it will be the most storied franchise in NHL history, the Montreal Canadiens. The Habs will bring the cup home for Canada, and it always seems that Montreal has to make everyone happy because other teams cannot get the job done and close the deal, i.e. Vancouver in 1994, Calgary in 2004, Edmonton last year, and now those poor choking Senators couldn’t bring the holy grail back home. I hope and pray, however, that the one Canadian team that does not win the cup EVER AGAIN is the Toronto Maple Laffs! If they win, I will fucking lose it. I hate that pathetic, moronic team with the intensity of a thousand burning suns and I always will. You people heard it here first, the Habs will end Canada’s cup drought and bring it home. When that is, I cannot say but I will be optimistic and say in about 3 years. They will be cup contenders in a year or so as they have shown they are on their way back to the top.

The habs have so muhc prospect depth its scary. They were ranked 2nd out of all the teams in prospect depth and hamilton is one game away from winning a calder cup. This shows a lot of promise for the future of the montreal canadiens. What makes me happy the most is that all our young players inluding the ones the roster arent all the same kind of player. We’ve got speedy europeans (Kostitsyn bros. Grabovski, PLekanec, perezhogin?) We’ve got finesse style north american players (Maxwell,Dagostini)We’ve got a pure goal scorer (Ryder)We’ve got power forwards (latendresse,White, HIggins, WE’ve got future 3rd liners with the whole package (CHipchura, Lapierre)We’ve also got a lot of forwards that add to the depth of this club (milroy, Locke, ferland, Lambert, lahti, Russel, Urquart)On Defense, we’ve got the stay at home, kick your ass defensemen (komisarek,Obyrne,Valnetenko,Emelin, cote,Biron,Benoit,Paquette,Cepek)and smooth skating offensive defensemen (Fisher,Carle,Gorges,Wyman). In goal we’ve got a future star of the league (Price) and a damn good Backup (Halak). Do see Gaineys master plan yet or are you blind? Hes building from within like he said he would. it’s not going to happen overnight though. The team is slowly getting younger and better. You cant just trade away all your veterans either or else who will be there to show them the way. Thats why im so high on Koivu. His worth ethic will rub off on the young guys. That’s also the reason i want kovalev out of here rihgt now. He’ll probably rebound and have a good season next year with montreal but i dont care. His idea of working 1 game out of 5 will not be a good influence on our future.I would love it if montreal signed souray because of his attitude but if I was gainey I would never accept anything higher than 4 mil. Souray is replaceable in my books. Hannan can do everything Souray can do. This is what the habs are gonna look like in 3 years:

    A. Kostitsyn – Higgins – Latendresse (his skating will be better)
    Ryder – Koivu – Dagostini
    S.Kostitsyn – Plekanec – Grabovsky
Lapierre – Chipchura – Sam Gagner (07 pick, rookie year)
    Markov – Komisarek
    Carle – Obyrne
    Valentenko – Fisher

-Maxwell and White will be playing NHL hokcey in three years. If they are playing with the canadiens they would have to beat out one of the players that are up there.
-Emelin will never come over to north America

Thanks for reading and i hope that this will spark a good conversation about prospects and the future instead of the everyday habs bashing.

I can feel Gaineys plan coming to full circle very soon. What a genius! ALthough we may not be legitimate cup contenders this year(although that can change as teh year moves on) we will be a exciting team to watch and really that is what we all want. Sure there will be critics that will never be satisfied be really I think that is more of a behavious trait that were born with. SOme poeple in life feel better when they spread there hate and depressed feelings. Kinda like that kid in school who doesnt like someone because they are always happy. God forbid!!!

Im happy to say I am one of the Habs fans that are on the minibus wating for the ride to glory. Sure we will be picking up fans along the way when this team is unbeatable but they wont be able to say they were there at the beginning. Oh well too bad for them.

NOw that is has been said that the Habs arent ready to shed a chunk of their payroll for a player like Briere it really opens up some other options. Everyone says we failed last summer with free agency but we werent even a real player by our own omission. SHanhan was seaked but didnt come. That was it. ELias and Arnott were never really targeted with realistic outcomes. This summer many options are there. VIa trade especially. Marleau is the most attractive possibilty. ALso if we lose Souray which I would hate to see but 5 million is too much then TImonen should be targeted along with Hannan.

DOes anyone see any other possible trade scenerios that would make sense for our present and future?

    I have one for you.

Last year, when Dumont was available, the Habs were already locked in with Sammi. But, check his numbers. Would he have been worth it?

Next year (2008), Lecavalier is a UFA. Wouldn’t it be better not to sign anyone big (just for the sake of signing a big name) this summer, and wait until next year. Gainey could take a stand and say, we are going after one of the biggest names in the league in 2008 and we’ll give him what he wants. Tell it like it is. The fans want this player and I’ll do anything to sign. “Vinny, I’ll call at midnight June 30th, 2008. Jean Beliveau even will let you wear his shirt if you’re interested.”

Or, do the same for Sid the Kid. Come out and say it, Montreal would love to have you. We’ll sign any contract that you write up. Name the price and the length.

Then, build around one of them.

  20. #20 habs4ever says:

Higgins you really think Price is a saviour and never played an NHL game.

He will never be near as valuable as Sid the Kid, wake up.

I didn’t like price as the 5th pick overall, might turn out to be good, but i’ll hold my breath until he actually plays with the habs.

Sid is the greatest thing since Mario and Wayne.

Don’t make such stupid comments just to try and bash Josh, you sound worse then him.

For once I like what Pepto has to say, and I agree, hey, yes we do have a lot of depth in our prospects, imagine if we could shed a lot of players and keep just the rookies, do a total rebuild. Even Koivu, Souray, all the big paycheque guys.

Build it with some decent defense, and some not so hot forwards, let the rookies do it all. Anyway we couldn’t do worse than we have now with the likes of Dandenault, Niinima and Johnson. Honestly, even Downie for God’s Sake?

And we call Gainey God for those types of moves? Sure he may be good at picking rookies but I stop there. We need another GM just to pick pro hockey players and leave Gainey as the GM of the Dogs. How about that one? Is that too harsh, but hey that is the road to the cup. A GM that can not only pick the rookies but pick real pros….

HAMILTON, Ontario (AP) -Carey Price led Hamilton to its first Calder Cup title, stopping 29 shots in the Bulldogs’ 2-1 victory over the Hershey Bears on Thursday night in Game 5 of the American Hockey League championship series.
Price, the 19-year-old goalie who spent most of the season in junior hockey with the Tri-City Americans, was the playoffs MVP. He was 15-6 in the postseason.

Ajay Baines gave Hamilton the lead with a short-handed goal at 9:33 of the third period. Maxim Lapierre also scored for the Montreal affiliate.

Jakub Klepis scored for Hershey, the Washington farm club that won the 2006 title.

Hamilton, in its 11th season in the AHL, lost to Hershey in the 1997 final and again to the Houston Aeros in a seven-game series in 2003.

A crowd of 14,205 attended the game at Copps Coliseum.

Here we go congrats to the BD’s and Carey Price looks like we have a bright future ahead … GO HABS GO !!! GO HABS GO !!! GO HABS GO !!!

All this time Gainey only wanted the Calder Cup! Maybe that’s all Gillett wants. Maybe Gillett doesn’t care if the Habs win, lose or fold, as long as Gillett gets the Calder Cup! That sounds stupid but its probably strange but true! That would explain why Gainey gives us crap like Samsonov, Johnson, Downie and sticks with losers like Kovalev and Koivu and pathetic defensemen!

Hooray, at least the Baby Habs won! I don’t know what Gainey’s plan is when the baby habs have to graduate, maybe Gainey will be forced to trade them for other prospective rookies maybe, you know, keep that Calder Cup coming….too strange to be true, but hey, in hockey too strange is the norm, especially when you have the weirdest freak of all Bettman as the big NHL honcho! Wasn’t he creepy giving the Stanley away last night? Wasn’t that like watching a big sewer rat in a three piece suit?

Hey JP, you talk like you own the place too. Typical, if someone doesn’t agree with you, ridicule them eh? Hypocrite! Sounds like you are the one doing the ridiculing. Grow up, this is a blog for fans of the habs. Not for Fanatics who can’t stand hearing the truth about what a crappy GM Gainey is when it comes to signing Pro Hockey Players. The NHL after all is a Pro Hockey League, it’s not the friggen Chicoutimi little league that you jerks keep thinking it is. What you were there too jeering Roy and others? You are so backward, so little minded. I guess Gainey is the same way. Don’t sign the winners, just sign losers like you, backwards blueberry picking jerks!!!

There was a time when the Habs were a Pro Team. It can happen again. All it takes is recognizing that the team now as it is, is not good enough. Except for the rookies. And I’ve been saying it all year, no one listens. Now that the rookies win the Calder Cup, of course they clap. Hooray.

So crap on me for saying the rookies are great. Greater than even Koivu, and way greater than Kovalev, heck the rookies had those two old stale farts shaking in their boots at the end of the season, even Koivu was worried Gainey would rebuild, and of course a rebuild means getting rid of deadwood.

Maybe next year is the rebuild. That is if Gainey and Carbo survive this winter when we all wonder, why are the Habs on a losing streak again? Not with Russell and Lahti, not with Koivu and Johnson, and even Bonk shooting blanks and crappy defense…..I’ll wait and see if JP is still there on his mighty high horse.

Of course I’ll still be there saying we should have rebuilt around the rookies.

  27. Aside from the talent those young Bull Dogs have , it’s the heart on those guy’s that really blow me away !!Remember when the Habs went on that yearly loosing skid downhill,it was a couple of Bulldogs and there drive to give her, that allmost got our Habbies in the play-offs,for those guys it’s a matter of pride and desire and nothing less than victory, hell give them all a big C.H. !!! Way to show us what it all about Bull Dogs !!!!

  28. Josh, i’m not *****ing on you for saying the rookies are great. You’re right. But Koivu just had a career year, and all you seem to be doing is *****ing on him.

Yashin got bought out for $17 million. Not bad, considering he’s free to go make money elsewhere now. The Toronto Sun, claiming insider knowledge, says up to 10 teams are interested. I can just picture the GMs meetings…

Jacques Martin:”Yashin, ‘e is a good player, oui?”

Brian Burke: “Keep takin’ hits off that crack pipe. By the way, he’s yours if you want him. I only pick up players with heart, good Canadian boys.”

Bob Gainey (thinking inwardly): “He’s just the guy we need to get Kovalev and Samsonov going…”

Burke: “You’d better pass the pipe to Mr. Selke…”

Gainey: ” Did I say that out loud?!?”

WEll I can be as pessimistic as anyone but I find it very hard to understand how someone could be sooooo down on Gainey and everything that is good for our franchise. After what he took over in 2003! The Dackells, the Juneaus, the Juha Linds. Even Brian Burke made mistakes like Dan CLoutier.

Gainey has taken this team quite a distance since his arrival but the key has to be the cup. FOr awhile it seemed like making the playoffs was a success, which is was after missing then 5 out of 6 years but now we are at the crucial point to be a top team. THe thing Gainey has established is that when we do get to the top then we will stay there for a long while. SOmething he accomplished in Dallas. ALthough Dallas is finally starting to putter off.

Im sure habas fans everywhere have there reasons why the habs fell apart this year. SOme would blame the injury to HUet, some would blame the flu weekend. SOme would also blame Kovalev. JOsh would probably blame the hokking penalties. HAHAHAHAH. And although they all contributed especially the HUet injury o nValentines the main reason we lost was because of the absence of Gainey after his tradgic loss. That was the time everything came apart. Carbo had very little control and you could tell how much of a general Gainey is. Withough him we have no order. WIthout him at all this year we finish behind Boston. Even Pierre Boivon leans heavily on Gainey’s shoulders as well as GIlette at times. WHen he left we crumpled and had no where to turn. WIthout him Carbo played tricks on the players with no one to answer to. WIthout him LAts stopped hitting and became useless.

Souray ,is the true leader of the Habs and we need his heart more than anything else to develop the rookies .He also has our only 100+ mph slapshot, one of our few players with size and ONE OF ARE VERY FEW enforcers. He is a invaluable part of the Habs.He can allso play great defence and will when he gets a real team around him and if you don’t believe me ask Don CHERRY !!!

  39. Pepto ,why don’t you try the little bitch blog site,it mite suite your needs more than Habs blog !!!

with Sourays shoulder problems he wont have a 100mph shot by the end of his contract. Hes going to be looking for a long term contract for that very reason. Without sourays shot, hes useless. Thats why Gainey should stay away and sign someone whos better on D liike Hannan

  42. LOL,the great Pactum speaks again, and again you serva no remedy for Souray replacement,it just mite be they is no known D man that can fill his boots at this time ! I bet Burke and the ducks would love Souray and his goal production and leadership for there next run at the cup !But hey Pactum what do they know ,eh? You got all the answers, don’t you? So ,genius who would you replace him with oh hockey wizard? Or are you all show and no go???lol.

I hope the Habs are going to take a real shot at getting Vincent from Tampa in 2 years he is what we really need here … him and the young talent we are working with now and the Habs will be on top of the hill again …

Ask Don Cherry? That guy’s one of the most overrated idiots in the sport!

And just like McCabe, Souray is drastically overrated. He’ll never score 25 goals again. The Habs need to build like Ottawa, with the forwards scoring the goals and the D shutting down the opposition and occasionally chipping in on the offensive end. Souray forget’s that his own end exists.

Schneider wants to come back to MTL, he’ll be an adequate replacement for Souray and a hell of a lot cheaper. And with a hell of a surplus of players NHL ready and 2 first round picks, I believe that a big trade will be coming at the draft for either a #1 centre or defenceman.

Souray is worth nothing more then 4.75 million.

Oh Geeze, I’m Pactum Serva, I’m dumb as a bag of door knobs…duh…..let’s give up Souray so we can sign players who would never fit into Montreal, and then blame the media, the tax man and the fans…..

Honestly, Souray not worth 4.75 million? You guys are definitely not drinking your Gatorade and your sunstroke is showing…eyes open but brain not working, duh.

Schneider an adequate replacement for Souray? Like as if Schneider would stand up to Chara. Great, just what we need, another wannabee forward like Markov, except with a different name, Schneider….

Actually Pactum is not dumb as a bag of doorknobs, he’s made some pretty bang on assessments this year, Souray is good but we can’t do another Markov type move to keep Souray. Honestly, like Markov will play that good for three more years at that price. He’ll pull a Kovalev and blame his elbow and then go crying to the Russian media….

But we need to shop around for some decent size defensemen. We have been going too small, we need to balance out the team. Most of all we need to balance Gainey out. He’s looking way too far down the road. Many teams have made the mistake of going too young too fast, but you need a good balance, some decent size hockey players, real pros, not the Little League mentality Gainey has going on, but some real NHL players.

We need to dump Kovalev, Samsonov, and find some real Canadian hockey players, ala Neidermeyer-style!

  47. Waytogo Habs #1, NOW WERE TALKING HABS HOCKEY !Though I respect your opinion,I would say at this point I would fashion our team after the Ducks ,eh! You know how I feel about Souray and I will say Iwould like Schneider to finish his career in Montreal ,but he’s like 40 years old dude, and in playing for the Habs he’d be exposed to all our short commings, like no back checking and rookie miscues etc, after all its not the great supporting cast Detroit has,is it? Still ,nice replacment for the likes of Niinamaa orDandanault.A defence with Markov,Souray,Schneider,Obrian,Biron,Komasarik,Bully and Streit, sounds good to me .

I had to laugh after the Bettman the Rat gave the cup away, for once Cherry even though he is dead wrong half of the time, way too redneck…at least he came out and said it.

It took the team with the most Canadian-content in the NHL to win the cup!!!!

Canadians! There, that is to all you jerks out there that crapped on saying “oh no there are no more good Canadian players”…or something like that.

Most of the NHL players out there who have more than one cup ring on their fingers are like Neidermeyer, Canadians. What does that say? How many European or Russian players do you see with more than one stanley cup ring? Very few.

I’m not go so far as say Europeans and Russian players are crap like Cherry often implies but doesn’t come out and say it…But somehow as long as Koivu is leading, we’ll never get a cup.

Sacrilage! Anti-Habs! Bully? Good? HAHAHAHAA!!!!!!!Markov,Souray,Schneider,Obrian,Biron,Komasarik and Streit, sounds good to me. But not Bully…If we could add Laraques, or heck someone who is an enforcer…..someone with size, who is good at head hunting, cause, hey that is now perfectly legal in the NHL…otherwise, we’ll see little Koivu beheaded next year…

Gainey seems to liek trading with Dallas and they are in desperte need of offense. They mihgt just take Kovalev off our hands and we could get one of their defensemen. Boucher would be terrific. Hes cheap at 2.5 mil and has probably the third hardest shot in the league after chara and souray. For that price I’ll take him. I dont see a down side to this. The french media will be jumping up and down and we get a cheaper souray who is better in his own end. They might need a sweetener to make the deal final. WE got tons of depth so i believe we could pull this deal off. Go Habs Go
