Super Saturday
-
The Canadiens have made a statement conquering past trouble areas in recent weeks.
An unthinkable comeback win in New Jersey, another 3-0 comeback effort against Washington to gain a valuable point. Situations where the old Habs would have curled into a ball and waited for the final buzzer.
Another confidence building statement would be to sweep these back to back weekend games. Afternoon games, back to back games, have not been a strong area for the Canadiens.
A strong weekend could put the Canadiens within striking distance of the Ottawa Senators and 1st place in the Eastern Conference.

- goalie : Didn't get to see the game at all but it's great to see Pacs get a hat trick and fpor Cole to be + 3. When was the last time this team won three games in a row? Great victory -looks like they're giving 100% effort!
- Senet1 : 4-2 win habs
- Senet1 : Gomez scores, Yea!!!
- goalie : As I said yesterday it will be interesting to see what our lame ass GM gets for players he ships out. Bourque is good and he'll help us but I still think we could have gotten more for him and for Halak when he was traded.
- Avatar37 : round those picks occur (probably 3rd).
- Avatar37 : An interesting article. If we slip to the 5th or 7th draft pick, a very interesting case could be made for drafting Galchenyuk. If we wind up with the second or third pick, I'm not sure who I'd draft, because clearly Yakupov is going to be drafted first overall. Our second round pick also becomes interesting, I know I'd take Vasilevski if he were still available. It will also be interesting to see if we can turn some of our veteran players (Moen, Gill, Campoli) into draft picks, and what

- Avatar37 : That is why PG should have waited on trading Cammalleri. Right now, there is a high demand for a top 6 forward, we could have gotten much more than Bourque in return. That isn't a knock against Bourque, but a knock against a knee-jerk reaction trade that didn't maximize our return on a top asset.
- Avatar37 : «link»
- Avatar37 : chips fall where they may. After all, the only difference between finishing 17th and 29th is how good a pick you get in the draft.
- Avatar37 : We currently sit in 26th place in the league. We are 15 points ahead of Columbus, it's safe to bet at this point they will place last. We are, however, only 4 points ahead of Edmonton so it's still wide open as to who is going to finish second last. I still think that it's time to sit the veterans, play the youth, let them get experience, and regroup for next year. I'm not suggesting deliberately tanking like the Penguins, but give all our young players lots of playing time and let the c
- Avatar37 : goalie - If it were not for the play of Cammalleri, we would never have made it out of round 1. Cammalleri played as big a part, if not bigger, than Halak did. Sure, Halak played well, but remember the team collapsed in front of him, making his job much easier. We had lots of blocked shots and the ones that got through were typically from the outside.
- Senet1 : Goalie you are absolutely right, of course the one thing we had the two previous years that won the games that we are losing this year was our power play. If you look at say 10 games that we should have won had we had a similar power play, again we would not be having these conversations. When your PP goes from first to last in the league that is a lot of goals. How many games have we lost this year by one goal. Again poor management who did not prepare for Markov's possible absence.
- goalie : I'll put it another way.... we need more players who are willing to get their noses dirty.
- goalie : Two years ago when our goaltending stole series adn our players suddenly scored the coaches / GM believed that that was our true team . Well time has proven that was not. Though I was very glad to see the Habs knock off some very good teams we were very fortunate. And fortunate that spring was spelled HALAK!
- goalie : The wrst mistake management could possibly make I believe is to say, we played well some games and we believe the team can play to that level more often in the future. This team CANNOT adnb DOES NOT play to a high enough level. Please do not kid yourself mamngement. hat is partially why we're in the lace we are.
- goalie : Senet is correct when he says that if we had more games with a better efort this year we'd likely be in the playoffs. It has been very inconsistent effort but much more than that. We lack big, tough playing and finishing. Never mind fighting for a moment. We did not compete for the pucks nor along the boards nor in front of both nets enough this year. Thus we are in 29th. If the coaching staff doesn't see that then they shouldn't be there.
- Senet1 : Surely Molson is not going to keep him as the GM?
- Senet1 : when he knows he will be fired at the end of the season. Nothing really makes since in this whole process.
- Senet1 : I am not sue why PG has not been fired by now. They could be waiting for another GM to come available at season end, but why would you not set up a committee to manage the team in the short run until a new GM can be named. There is no since in chaning coaches because whoever the GM is he will want to name his own coach. Gainey and a committe of other executives can manage the team through to the trading deadline and onward. What motivation does PG have to making any worthwhile trades when he is
- Senet1 : I am too mch of a competitor to want my team to tank to. However, If these players played like they ae cabable of playing all year we would not be having this discussion right now, we woud be talking about the playoffs and who we would rather meet in the first round.
- rocky : Exactly, and Senet nails it when he says we have not had an elite top 5 in the nhl player since lafleur.
- goalie : I too want the Habs to get the best possible draft this June. We all need SOME hope!
- rocky : He is persona non grata in habville, and a ghost in every sense of the term.
- goalie : It remains a miracle how we have heard from our mighty GM twice since Christmas - the trades involving Spacek and Cammy and those comments were extremely brief. PG just does not cut it in my world. Part of a GMs job is to go public from time to time. PG never does that in fact he's a ghost GM!
- rocky : Its true, there is no honor in that. These guys have only known the ethic of giving it all to win every night. I do not want them to "tank", and they will never do that anyway. I do want them to lose though, as awful as it sounds.
- goalie : Roicky as a good point. We all want the Habs to get a really good draft pick. However, players, coaches etc. also have a keen desire to compete and win. That's why they're playing at the pro level. Thus we can only hope that the team plays some good games and let the chips fall where they may. After the disasterous season we've had let's not lower ourselves adn get involved in any dscussions about 'tanking' games.
- rocky : So long.
- Senet1 : Good discussion rocky, I have to step out for an hour, but may be back later.
- Senet1 : The only way this team comes back to a team with long term potential is to draft a game breaker. Even all the other bad teams have a Stamkos or a player like him. He have some good player so what we need is a Malkin that we can count on 80% of the time to win a game for us.
- rocky : I mean winning will only do them harm that is.
- rocky : It really hurts because my reflexes make me want to cheer like mad, but it will only hurt the team now.
- Senet1 : Yes I have mixed feeling when watching the game. Last night I say here we go again. with our record of shoot losses I did not expect to win that one. Yet I wanted to win real bad?????
- rocky : God, so horrible to sit and hope for losses, but here we are.
- Senet1 : Our problem is we play one out of every 4 games good and therefore, we play well enough to stay on the borderline of a top five pick. If we win three or four in a row we could take ourselves right out of the running.

February 2, 2008 at 4:57 pm
Third period…here come the “barrage of calls against the CAnadiens…WATCH…theyll make it close in the late third…I HATE BETTMANS REFS!!!!,,,you know..i was thinking they should have a R.A.P…referee accountability panel…….The coacheshave challenges they can call after the game(or file during)…lets say,..”3″…if there is sufficient reason that there was a misconduct of justice for a bad call or “no call” there are points assesed to the official in question..if the official acumulates a certain amount of points within a specified number of games during the season…he is demoted to a lower leaugue ..American or what have you..a replacement ref is then called up to take his place…if there was a bad call or “no call” that results in a game being decided by that factor..the ref can be fined..if the ref does not show improvement when he returns to the N.H.L..he is suspended and the Panel can decide his fate..IT IS TIME REFS TAKE ACCOUNTABILITY FOR THE MISTAKES THAT HAVE A DIRECT AFFECT ON THE OUTCOME OF IMPORTANT GAMES>>ESPECIALLY PLAYOFFS!!!!!
IT MUST BE IMPLEMENTED!!!!
February 2, 2008 at 4:59 pm
Yes HJ you called that to a “T”…he needs to reasses himself..but not with the Habs….maybe the “manitoba Moose?”

February 2, 2008 at 6:01 pm
Yeah Carbos awesome this year! we have to finish high inthe standings though…
February 2, 2008 at 6:04 pm
Ottawa can take the two points and stck it up their arse, i will never cheer for the leafs EVER. We can catch ottawa without the laffs help if we continue the way we are playing. Leafs suck ball and so does ottawa GO HABS GO
February 2, 2008 at 6:05 pm
Well we are a lot better then the 14th spot we were to be at (so far) so that would be about 20-28 over all…. BUT WE SIT 4TH IN THE EAST (2ND IN POINTS )AND WE ARE TIED FOR THIRD OVER ALL.. I think that the coach has a lot to do with it…
February 2, 2008 at 6:13 pm
If you look at the ice times the top players are now starting to play a lot more then before (Carbo was playing everyone about the same at the start of the year) and the right players seem to be out there at the right time (except when ever BRISEBY IS IN THE LINE UP)..Carbo is showing that he has learned a lot from last year. His lines stay the same for most of the game(unlike before)
February 2, 2008 at 6:30 pm
I don’t know what would be better … LAFFS WIN AND THE HABS COME TO WITH IN 3POINTS OF OTT OR THE LAFFS LOSE AND TB WIN SO THAT THE LAFFS FALL TO LAST IN THE EAST
TB WOULD HAVE SECOND LAST BECAUSE OF WINS EVEN THOUGH THEY WOULD BOTH HAVE 49 POINTS…………….I THINK LAFFS IN LAST WOULD BE OH SOOOOO SWEET
GO HABS GO…
February 2, 2008 at 7:03 pm
That was “Conspiracy”…and the other was “EYE”..Toronto wins tonight too…
February 2, 2008 at 7:08 pm
Does any body think there should be a “REFREREE ACCOUNTABILITY PANEL”…so coaches can have a say at the poor call in this league????..ANYBODY THINK REFS SHOULD BE IMMUNE TO MISTAKES…AND SHOULDNT PAY FINES LIKE LIKE PLAYERS AND COACHES??????
R.A.P …REFEREE ACCOUNTABILITY PANEL ANYONE??????
February 2, 2008 at 7:16 pm
WE the fans have power to write and implement this and put hockey on the fore front and establish this ground breaking endorsement. We can change the face of sport and see that fairness and justice is given to all participants who solely rely on the unbiast truth in calling a game. Time and time again i hear coaches and staff hollaring , as well as fans and players at lame calls during desicive and turning points that have an overwhelming impact on the outcome of games…this is in all sport!…either we implement the “challenge rule”..and have replays on bad calls in the NHL..or we use the R.A.P.program and fine these pricks for controling the destiny of the game..and the “AMERICAN KISS ASSING IN THE PLAYOFFS!!!!
February 2, 2008 at 7:17 pm
I agree with you man. Is it fair if we get fined and they don’t. (let’s start a mob
February 2, 2008 at 7:18 pm
Ok geniuses..some one is going to turn around and say they came up with the idea..but no ones talking…dont ***** about the refs then..I WILL!
February 2, 2008 at 10:12 pm
Shut up habman, this is a hockey blog. no need for bad language.
February 2, 2008 at 10:36 pm
habman, you need to relax – nobody loves a bad call but I rarely (very, very rarely) see a game that I think is significantly affected by bad calls. It is what it is and it all evens out in the end.
Anyway, an awesome game tonight and another 2 points on Ottawa. If we win against New York tomorrow we’ll be in position to overtake Ottawa by beating them on Tuesday
February 2, 2008 at 10:43 pm
Oh nice the Laffs beat Ottawa ….
February 2, 2008 at 11:20 pm
If we win the next two teams we are 2nd in the league and 1st in the conference! let’s hpoe they win tommorrow
February 2, 2008 at 11:21 pm

Remember that goal against Tampa Bay in game 6?

I didn’t say it never happens, I said it “very, very rarely” happens. I would challenge anyone who has a serious issue with the officiating in NHL games to construct and program a robot to make the calls. The refs are well-trained and they do an outstanding job in my opinion. Does that mean that I’m always happy with a call? Of course not. It means that I understand that these men are human and that, at the end of the day, it’s a game.

Yeah I’ve been thinking about that too. I gotta relax.
February 3, 2008 at 11:28 am
Pleks is the man. If Higgins and Ryder get going, this team is gonna be tough down the stretch.
GO Habs GO
February 3, 2008 at 11:28 am
Woohoo, I bitched about Begin and his uselessness and Guy benches him for the Isles game…..maybe Guy IS seeing this too. Dandy’s back in his place…no dumb penalties and even a goal. Trade-off is that he re-inserted Brisebois for some unknown reason. He blew Huet’s shutout by trying to make a Markov or Streit move while being last man back….but I digress….WE WON !!! But seriouisly, we’re playing great hockey, but these two guys should be alternates in case of injuries down the stretch and into the playoffs…anyone else agree?
But lets get to the matter at hand….all the sports anaylists on TV are asking the same question….”Are these Habs the real deal?” Seems to me they are…. the last puzzle piece for our boys was mastering the home games….5-1-1 in the last 7 means they’re figuring it out. I don’t think the Isles were even in the game…except for the 5 on 3…this is the best hockey I’ve seen from our squad since 93….and this year so far is arguably better. Getting the Koivu line scoring again would be the cherry on top, and they’re coming along…working hard and getting chances again, Only a matter of time before some of them start going in. And how about Ryder standing up for Higgins…first emotion I’ve seen from Ryder since after each of his 30 goals last season….good to see Ryder…keep it up. The Lapierre line is playing good solid hockey…doing their job, and that all you can ask. The 4th line WITHOUT Begin are coming up big also, and the Kovy line speaks for itself. One of the top all-round defensive cores in the league right now. All 6 of these guys are playing well are doing what they should. Hamrlik and Georges are great defensively, as are Komisarik and Frankie “Bulldog” Bullion, as these guys hit every thing in their zone, and Markov and Streit lead the offensive charge from the blueline along with good defensive play. And say no more about Huet right now…simply magical. I’m thinking against Toronto Thurs. night is when he’s getting a break…but we may see Halak against the Rangers today.
Are ya feeling it like me fellow Habs faithful? Are ya feeling that this team has a chance for some great things? We got the Rangers today…and ya know what 2 points in this game means don’t ya? It sets up a game Tues. night against the Sens for first in the conference…LETS DO IT GANG, fourth place is not a worthy finish for this team this year…keep climbing the ladder and we may start to see the tails of the Red Wings wagging happily in their Presidents Trophy spot. I know thats a long shot, but our boys got their fans believing again, and that goes a long way. You’re playing outstanding hockey lads and you’re starting to get recognition from the rest of the league now. Pound the no-scoring, underachieving Rangers into the ice and get these points like you can. The Sens are waiting in the wings to hand over the crown for the new first place team in the east. Woohoo….GO HABS GO !!!
February 3, 2008 at 11:57 am
Seriously, this team seems to be getting better as the season wears on, showing me new things, and being more creative in the offensive zone, they really could go on a tear to finish the season. The old knocks against the Habs the past few years are starting to fade, these guys are playing with heart and though I hope Bob Gainey will be active on the trade front I don’t think he necessarily needs to be. Especially in goal, don’t trade any of the goalies unless a bona fide top 6 player is coming over in return. Huet should be offerred a contract ASAP, just don’t include a NTC, especially if we retain Halak as well, the Habs will have unparalelled depth in goal over the next few years. I think the time will soon be coming where you can call this team a legitimate threat in the playoffs, if it’s not here already.
The Habs haven’t run into any real serious injury problems and hopefully that will continue but I think their depth is good enough to overcome that. So Rangers in town? I predict a 5-2 Habs win which would bring the Habs 1 point behind #1 in the conference with the chance to seize it Tuesday against a slumping Sens team. GO HABS GO!!
