Team Canada: World Junior Championships

  • The best part of the Holiday season is watching Team Canada at the World Junior Hockey Championships. I’ve been watching the World Juniors for many years now, it is a tournament where Canada has had lots of success and many Championships. Canada won 7 of 10 titles in the 90s.

Most are familiar with this tournament, If you’re not, you are missing out. The Tournament typically showcases the most skilled young players in the game and the next generation of future superstars. From a Montreal Canadiens point of view, this year’s edition might be the best to watch in a long time. The Canadiens have 3 players invited to camp and who are all very likely to be starters.

Carey Price, Kyle Chipchura and the infamous Guillaume Latendresse.

I can’t remeber the last time the National Junior team had so many Montreal prospects contending for spots, and more than likely the starting goalie will be a future hab. This is a good sign and a prime example of where the Canadiens are headed – in the right direction.

Angelo Esposito the 16 year old Montreal phenom has been invited to Camp as well. It might be tough for him to crack the lineup but will be very interesting to watch if he should. If it’s any indication, the last 16 year olds to suit up at the World Juniors were: Sidney Crosby, Jason Spezza and Jay Bouwmeester.

Canada is fielding a very young team and although Canada is not favored to win this year, this is Team Canada and International competition and once you put that jersey on all bets are off. Of course, I will be watching and commenting on each game. The puck drops December 26th.
