Time Off

  • The Canadiens won’t play until Thursday night in Atlanta in what can only be called a ‘must win’ game.

Aren’t they all must win games now?

The time off will hopefully help cure and eliminate any ‘flu’ or ‘bug’ that still going around. Hopefully give the coaching staff some time to eliminate the ‘crappy hockey bug’ that’s infected just about everyone.

More importantly…this little rest starts the yearly “get the Habs into the playoffs” tradition.

This is where Habs fans start watching and cheering for other teams. Not against the Canadiens, but against other teams where the outcome will give the Canadiens the best possible chance to squeak in to 8th.

Because the Canadiens never make it easy on themselves, they must hope the 7th seed defeats the 9th seed and the 8th seed loses to the 1st seed and every possible combination on every single night to keep them alive.

This is part of being a Habs fan for the past decade or more.

Tonight the Rangers square off against the Islanders. Now the Islanders made some good moves at the deadline, and even prior to that were really turning it on. They are probably locked into one of those spots. So on this night we all cheer on Ryan Smyth and the Islanders to defeat the Rangers for the sole reason of keeping the Rangers off our back ass.

Because a Rangers win puts them only 1 point behind us, with 2 games in hand.

So pull out your Jarmoir Jagr Voodoo doll and your Islanders jersey because this is what we need if the Canadiens don’t plan on winning any more games this year.

The I don’t understand was for JOSHTM.

Call me insaine, crazy, full of shit, BUT, I predict that when Montreal makes the playoffs in 8th spot and plays Buffalo the Habs will knock, beat, take Buffalo out of the playoffs.

I know that Boston is not Buffalo BUT Montreal finnished in 8th spot by the skin of thier teeth they went on to defeat Boston. AND it could I should say will happen with Buffalo…………… The playoffs are a whole different season………….

  2. By the way, there was an article about the playoff race in the East by Pierre Lebrun of the Canadian Press which broke down the teams. It’s interesting, and if you get a chance, look at it.

Who is saying the right things, right now? Boston, Toronto, New York Rangers

Who is saying the wrong things, right now? Montreal, Carolina, Florida

The image that you project to your opposition before the puck is even dropped, does matter a lot. They need to stop whining and just start winning.

The Habs will start winning…… The Hockey Gods have spoken…….The Ghosts of the Old Forum will come to the Bell Centre and follow the Habs bringing them the wins that they need…..The Ghosts want the hockey team of old back…….. Have Faith boys………….

For once I have to say well said Rob!

I agree, Montreal needs to project a winning attitude, from Youpie, the fans, the media and most of all Alex Kovalev!

You can tell he wants to win but the wrong way. The rookies are good, I am sure when Alex was a rookie he too made stupid comments.

But Alex is one of the leaders, it is time to lead instead of grandstanding~!

I can’t keep up, that’s only 3 responses in a row. Yeah, a spell-checker would be nice. Or, download the newest version of Firefox. If you make a spelling mistake, the browser will underline it in red for you.

PS…it won’t help with mistakes like using “its” when you’re shortening “it is”…or using “your” when you’re shortening “you are”…or “here” when you really mean “hear”.

GO HABS GO (oops, according to Firefox, “HABS” is spelled wrong!)

Dalley1… in my opinion, a puck hitting the post or finding its way to the trapper is not “lucky”. If the puck doesn’t go into the net on a shot that the goalie didn’t clearly “save”, then it’s either lack of skill by the shooter, or great positioning by the goalie. It doesn’t mean the goalie’s lucky.

Dalley1… why should I give anyone who makes that much money any slack? I make an average salary in a very competitive and demanding work environment and nobody gives me any slack. If you don’t perform when you’re supposed to, you get criticized. That’s just the way it is.

Regarding Kovalev… chew on this…what would a Russian newspaper have to gain about making up what they printed about what Kovalev said about the Canadiens? I think Kovalev just wasn’t smart enough to think that anyone would be able to translate what he said in any other language. I’m not saying what he “allegedly” said is wrong. I’m just saying that the fact that he said it is wrong.

Maybe what Gillett should do is fire the whole team, buy out Pittsburgh and move it to Montreal. Couldn’t do any worse. Crosby is already under a lot of media scrutiny and he always dreamt of playing for the Habs.

I think that would be the logical thing to do. Maybe keep Souray, Pleks and the rookies. Fire the rest and mix them with the Penguins/and rename the Penguins the Habs.

Could be done you know, the conditions are just right for that.

  10. #10 Rob says:
    March 6, 2007 at 9:56 pm

What Joshtm and I agree on something? OMG, John Kordic must have just rolled over in his grave or something!

Now, witness as Joshtm tries to pick another on-line fight with another blogger that he doesn’t necessarily agree with! C’mon, Joshtm, we are all supposed to be cheering for the same team here. As I have said before, in-fighting with other Habs fans is really just a waist of everyone’s time that won’t go anywhere. It is certainly not getting the Canadiens anywhere right now as they seem to have also picked up the bug of fighting/criticizing each other (if these rumors are true.)

Isn’t it bad enough that we all have had to watch this team that we are all addicted to completely and totally fall apart? Isn’t it bad enough that there are few true leaders on this team that are worth looking up to as leadersfor kids (Koivu, Souray, Gainey and ?Higgins– that’s about it that I can think of)? Isn’t it bad enough that no one seems to even try for Montreal until they have been traded off the team? Isn’t it bad enough that every coach we have had for the last decade or so is succesfully leading another team? Isn’t it bad enough that compared to a team like Buffalo which is currently comprised a mostly minor leaguers, our team cannot hold a candle on most nights? Aren’t the excuses for losing and playing poorly (ie. biased refereeing, Bettman’s rule changes, bias in favor of US teams, injuries, flu bugs, back to back games, etc.) growing a little thin?

C’mon show a little sympathy to your fellow Habs fan, will ya? It is not Dalley’s fault that the Habs stink. At some point in this past season, they just seem to have collectively decided to give up playing hockey and stopped trying. When you don’t put in the effort and decide that you can get your way simply by trying to jeer your opponent, you will always lose! Always!

Geeze Rob, you are like the stupid alkie dad in Tulledega Nights, you know, do something stupid just cause the goings too good!

Can’t be an arsehole everyday of your life you know! Or maybe you can.

The point is, clearly there is no leadership in Montreal. It is a corporation that is disjointed and has lost contact with the hockey team and its players.

We might as well have friggen Walmart run the habs and Carbo could be just one of those greeters! That is how far the habs have strayed from being a team. It is more imortant to management that Koivu appear for a photo shoot at Children’s Hospital than say play hockey and earn his keep!

What the phoque is all of this?

At least Pittsburgh is closer to being a hockey team from the ground up. Owned by hockey players for hockey players. Not just another division of San Jose Business Marketing Empire of Gillett!

Maybe if Gillett did indeed buy out the Penguins lock stock and barrel, that is bring the entire management and coaching staff and scouts, the whole infrastructure to Montreal, who knows maybe even Mario would love to retire in Montreal too. But it could be done!

Clearly Gainey, Carbo and the richest millionaires could be bought, buy out Kovalev’s and Koivu’s contracts, heck that is just a few million towards bringing a winning team!

Hey JOSHTM…… you did not answer my question………

  16. Uh oh, here we go yet again! The same old, broken record garbage from Joshtm!

It is all management’s fault! Geezzz, there has got to be a picket line somewhere in Montreal that you could be walking in the -20 degree celsius weather with your placard with that repetitive message. (Instead of the luxury of being behind your keyboard.)

Sorry, was the “going too good” there, Joshtm? What time period are you referring to exactly?

Oh, was it “going too good” for you to attack another human being that currently has the misfortune of calling themselves a Hab’s fan. Give it a rest! You don’t need to attack people personally for expressing their opinions as they relate to the Habs. Dalley is just trying to be optomistic; something that you could probably use a little more of.

If he and I are wrong that the Habs could still turn it around before the season is over, then we are wrong! BFD! Do you think that I should really pout like a small child and spew hatred in all directions because the Habs have let me down! There is always next year, and some very good prospects coming up through the system. Relax. We are all simply Habs fans trying to make the best of a bad situation. We actually don’t really have significant influence over the team, Joshtm. No matter how many CAPITALS that we use in our posts!

I still say, if we are gonna have Rob all hot for Sid the Kid, maybe Gillett can buy Sid the Kid for Rob and bring the whole team to Montreal. Couldn’t be worse than the stupid pathetic team that Gainey and Carbo put together!

What in the blue hell are you talking about? Don’t beat your meat. Just come out and say it Dude. That’s if you are a man.

  21. A few weeks ago on this very blog, I said that Sid Crosby deserved more respect than was afforded him by the fans in Montreal. If you will recall, you lead the attack on that opinion, Joshtm. I also predicted that Montreal might pay a terible price for seemingly being more focused on antics than playing hockey. At that point, the Habs were still fourth in the conference. Do you remember any of that, Joshtm? Was management really responsible for that?

Now, you want to fire the entire Habs organization and replace them with the Pens. How ironic is life anyways?

  22. #22 Joshtm says:
    March 6, 2007 at 11:05 pm

Hey Dalley, what is this “be a man” that’s even more cornier than Rob’s “Gainey’s rebuilding” and join the “picket line”….you too take the cake! Honestly, you are both a laugh!

Making all kinds of excuses for the Habs, like, the classic “lace up your skates” eh Dalley? What put that with Rob’s “armchair GM” and the other “looks good on paper”….man you guys are just out to lunch!

Ten goals on paper is ten goals on paper, that is the stat for one of the more higher paid players on the habs, on any other NHL team that is pathetic. But to Robs and Dalley’s point of view ten points seems to be a friggen miracle!

What is even more screwed up is after they crap on people for pointing out just how pathetic and out of touch that is, they turn around after saying how dare we question Gainey and the team, they turn around and crap on the Habs.

Talk about being all Schizo! Man, get yourself on the same page for once!

More like your minds all smoke Dalley! First you say the Habs are crap. Then you turn around and criticize people for saying the same thing you say. Then you praise Gainey and the players. And then in the following paragraph you say the team is not doing well. Then you crap all over the players again. Make up your friggen mind, and what is this “be a man” crap too! You are freaked Dalley you know that?

The habs need to improve, granted that. Gainey has done a bad job signing and overpaying these underachievers. He did not take advantage of the trade deadline to improve. Many in Montreal questioned that. What Dalley you are gonna say how dare everyone else but you a whole city of Montreal question Gainey?

Talk about being a pompous arse!

Getting his hockey info. from….Well he is a real winner eh. It is pass your bed time now dear. Go get mamma to tuck you in…..

  26. If you cannot beat ’em, buy ’em! Right, Joshtm?

I think we can officially say that Joshtm may have officially left the building if you know what I mean. He has come full circle in proving himself a hippocrite.

Every blue moon, I sometimes think that he might have some real ideas, but it’s more and more clear to me that in the words of Jack Todd, “there ain’t no gold in thum thar hills.”

It is all just the same old poison that has resulted in the current mess that the Habs currently find themselves. Joshtm, I will repeat that neither you nor the Habs can win simply by jeering your opponent!

  27. #27 Dalley1 says:
    March 6, 2007 at 11:18 pm

  28. #28 Joshtm says:
    March 6, 2007 at 11:21 pm

I can see Rob aka Dalley has not taken his schizo pills today. Say Rob when you meet Dalley remind him how hypocritical it is to:

First say the habs are great.

Then in the next paragraph say the habs suck.

Then to criticize people for doing same thing you do. Talk about the true definition of hypocrite. At least Rob aka Dalley in his schizoid personalties is at least consistently hypocritical.

Actually if you can’t beat em buy em, is not the analogy you fool!

I said, the habs under Gainey and Carbo are pure crap! Except of course for a few players.

My solution is not if you can’t beat em buy em! The problem is the Habs! They stink, from the top down. Practically anyone who has posted on this site has said that! On almost all the sports shows they have all said there is something wrong in Montreal! Even other blogs point out the Habs Blog seemed ot have it bang on!

Hello? Are you there? Can you smell the roses? I guess if you can, then everything is rosy for you? Ignorance is indeed bliss!

What I say is, the Penguins are threatening to move to Kansas! Yes Alice in Wonderland aka Rob aka Dalley, why move to Kansas when you can move to Montreal?

  29. #29 Dalley1 says:
    March 6, 2007 at 11:22 pm

  30. #30 Dalley1 says:
    March 6, 2007 at 11:26 pm

Shit. He woke up………Well we can continue this tommorrow. I have to get some sleep. I have to work in the morning. JOSHTM don’t wake mamma, she has to work tommorrow as well. God nite sweetie big hugs and kisses……..

  31. Actually, Dalley and I are two seperate people, josh. I know that it is hard for you to understand that two people might not agree completely with you. I also respect the fact that you are a dedicated and devoted follower of the Canadiens. I also know that given past Habs teams, you expect the Canadiens to win the Stanley Cup every single year. That was fourteen years ago, joshtm, and even that year was a bit of a fluke!

You have heard all this before but I will repeat it again. The Canadiens do not go from a crappy, one inconsistent goaltender team to a Stanley Cup winning T-E-A-M in the span of a couple years. There has been no real help from UFAs and rentals — Samsanov and Kovalev both came to the Habs through those routes, and people cheered when they did. Perhaps, you were one of those who cheered at the time, Joshtm.

So you have to build the team in Montreal from the ground up with quality prospects like Carey Price, Alexei Emelin, Andrei and Sergei Kostitsyn, Kyle Chipchurra, Chris Higgins, David Fischer, Ryan O’Byrne… Hell, even Gui Latendresse (if he hadn’t been pulled early out of Junior at the request of fans like you, Josh.)

Unfortunately, developing a team like this may take a bit longer than buying the Penguins, but at the end of the day, it probably feels a little less cheap!

If it will satisfy you to know if the Canadiens are mathematically eliminated from the playoffs, for about three minutes, I too will vent and talk about how everyone involved should be fired in the same manner that you constantly do. Then, I will probably go play a game of hockey, have a beer afterwards and look forward to next year’s Habs.

Whether the article from Kovy is trueor not (who cares) there is definetely one part of it that is. THe french canadiens starting their own clique. Laps and Lats a clique? HA !!!! What have they done? WHat have they proved? NOthing ! Lapierre is a awkward skater although fast who does not ahve any kind of wrister. ALways doing awkward half ass slappers. Whats up with that. I have a better shot then him and I havent played since 2003 for the blades. I have barely skated since. I played junior with a dozen of players with more skill then Lapierre. Snake….so you dismiss the entire article accept for the small part which suits your opinion. ya good one

Lapierre is fine as a 4th line player he only plays 11:17 minutes a game, his job is to hit, work hard and bring energy and that’s what he does.

And Lats plays 12:10 per game, leads all rookies in hits, 2nd on our team in hits, and 29th in the entire NHL. not to shabby for a 19 year old. oh ya he has 11 goals he’s only 2 goals behind the 4.5 million dollar man Alexei Kovalev. Kovalev plays 18:48 per game more than any other forward. at least lats and laps can say they are rookies what’s Kovalev escuse for his poor play?

what’s with the hate for Lapierre and Latendresse? seems rather unfounded considering there ages and NHL experience.

ya real big french canadien cliche on Montreal a whole 5 players who are 3rd and 4th liners.

BTW Lats couldn’t play in Hamilton this year it was juniors or the big club.

If the Habs don’t grab one of those bottom spots, I really hope the Leafs don’t either. I think it’s time to focus on next season, hopefully one with some major changes in the top 6 forwards.

No matter what is said in here it will not make the Habs a better team.

I will make a bold prediction: If the habs win Thursday night they will make the playoffs because they will start winning again. If they loose that one then it is over. The Habs should have gotten a good lecture from Gainey etc. over the past few days.

They Habs players should take a long hard look at the history of this team. The cups, the old players and take pride in wearing the Habs jersey. Maybe Gainey should get Dryden, Cournoyer, Robinson , Béliveau to come into the dressing room and give the team a lecture a pip talk on what being a Montreal Canadien is all about to get this team motivated again.

Rumor out of FL (fourth period) – Montreal Canadiens GM Bob Gainey is expected to be the first in line if GM Feaster puts LeCavalier on the market.(FL would be stupid to let him go)

I think all the bad things would be forgotten if Vinny landed here (at least until we trash him for his lack of D)… he is the type of player that brings a balance of talent and size. Love to see the CH on him })

  46. Snake:

I agree with you completely on Lapierre and Lats. True, as has been pointed out, they are immature players, and still have lots of potential.

However, we have all seen this before many times recently (Richer, Lebeau, Brisbebois, Theodore, etc., etc.). A French Canadian kid makes this roster for the Habs, and tries for about ten games (or maybe even one full season if the fans are lucky) which is usually all that it takes until they become immortalized as fan favorites in Montreal. Then they proceed to rest on their laurels until the fans change their mind about that particular kid (which usually takes 2-3 years.) When they finally get booted from the team, they go off crying about how tough it is to play in Montreal to their friends.

Instead of playing hockey with effort and heart, these guys become spoiled brats, thinking that they should have the privilege of sticking Sid Crosby in the ribs with a butt end off the opening face off when the truth is that some of these guys don’t have the skills, effort or heart to carry Sidney Crosby’s jockstrap. Their dysfunctional patterns of behavior have to change. These rookie guys should be hitting everything that moves, throwing themselves in front of shots and doing everything to push that puck past the goal line — they should be behaving like squirrels who are trying to get a nut!

Again, I repeat that antics don’t win hockey games. Effort and heart do.

You are so very correct Rob.

If we can see the problems, why can’t management see the problems as well?

  48. Just to illustrate this, reading post #83 would indicate to me that some fans are actually satisfied with Lapierre and Latendresse’s play this year. However, we can hardly characterize their performances this season as of a Dion Phaneuf calibre, can we? Some of the Habs rookies have been marginally OK — none have been great!
