Toronto’s Crumbling
-
The Toronto Maple Leafs are imploding.
The Leafs have dropped to 14th in the Conference and there’s been rampant speculation that John Ferguson tried to fire Paul Maurice, a move he made no doubt trying to save himself.
What better time for the Habs to take advantage and get back into the win column?
Could a Habs win tonight be the one that sends John Ferguson Jr packing?
Ferguson is on his way out, sooner or later. The only thing to worry about is getting the two points against a vulnerable team and get back to winning.

- Senet1 : It will be interesting to see how Sutter does because to me the Oilers are not his kind of team, but then again neither were the Flames.
- goalie : I don't know when they'll announce it but the Oilers will be signing Sutter (Flames ex-coach) to coach their team - that's why Kevin Lowe chose him to coach in the World's. That was the world's worst kept secret.
- Senet1 : I guess I wish we could get it done so all the speculating was over and we can get to building out team.
- goalie : I can't type.... what a faux pas on my behalf...
- goalie : I just realized what I said adn didn't say yesterday. What a fayx as on my behalf. Regarding coaching Randy Cunnyworth MUSDT stay as an assistant- he deserves at least that after the tremendous job he did in the latter part of this past season. I'd still mlike to have Robinson, Carbo adn Allard on the staff also.
- Avatar37 : I agree Senet, my choice if we can't have Cunneyworth would be Crawford, Robinson on defense, Cunneyworth for offense, and Carbo as offense/faceoffs .
- Senet1 : I think if I had my choice it would be Crawford and see if he could get Carbo and Robinson as assistants. That would be my idea coaching team.
- goalie : I witnesed Marc Crawford MANY times when the Avs, etc. played against Oilers and let me tell you - he is constantly on the referees asses virtually game after game. He is the complete OPPOSITE of J. Martin. Crawford is calm on TSN but he is one excited coach behind the bench. A friend of mine who was an NHL linesman for 26 years said they dreaded Crawford he was so tough on the officials!
- goalie : You know, I've bee thinking about the coaching situation. I'd be really excited if the Habs had Hartley as head coach and Carbo adn Robinson as his assistants. I also read it somewhere about a month ago that Toronto's goalie coach Allard (?) wants to relocate back to Montreal where he has his goaltending school/business. Add him to the mix and I'd say the Habs would be in great shape coaching wise.
- Avatar37 : Well, from what I recall, Hartley didn't do all that well with the Thrashers. But, I don't know enough about him to judge one way or the other. Crawford I do know, and he always seemed to be a good, level headed coach to me.
- Senet1 : even Pacioretty two years ago did not impress any of us. Younger players have to play and make mistakes and learn from those mistakes. If they sit in the press box they are learning nothing.
- Senet1 : Of course if he have some good assistants like a Larry Robinson to teach the young defence and someone like Carbo to teach faceoffs etc. then your coach does not have to be as good at teaching. If Hartley fits the bill you get no argument from me. My only previous point is that if he is impatient with your younger players to the point that he does not play them, then we are right back where we were with Martin. Martin was a good coach too, but how he handled Emelin, PK and even Pacioretty two
- goalie : I would like to see the Habs sign a coach who realizes that our team isn't tough enough (we need to get bigger and somewhat more nastier),the coach needs t be a great TEACHER and be a coach who can get the players to understand and buy into his system. Other than that I couldn't care what lingo he speaks. I wnat to see our team become a ligitimate contender fast!
- HabsLoseAgain : Well we dont know if he is or is not a teaching coach. I woukd just hate to paint Hartley something that he is not. There will always be questions but if Hartley was hired as the habs new bench boss i for one would not be overly upset.
- Senet1 : My thoughts are not that he is or is not a good coach but rather that when he won the cup he had an experience team of superstars on that team. Where as we have a group of young inexperienced players, is he a teaching coach or a tactical coach or both? I am not question whether he is a good coach, but my question therefore is he the coach for us at this point in the deveopment of our team?? Not sure we are all purely speculating at the moment?
- Senet1 : Something happened to my first post. I will try again.
- Senet1 : That is why I said I am not sure he is the coach for us at this time? Right now we are all speculating including yourself, because non of us know for sure?
- HabsLoseAgain : Crawford also won a cup with Patrick Roy so would you say he is a good coach or did he just have great players and one of the best goaltenders of alltime?
- HabsLoseAgain : Senrt so please give me some reasons why you think Hartley is not the coach the habs need right now. What is it that you do not like about him or his coaching style?
- HabsLoseAgain : Well all great coaches had great players playing for them so i guess you you add a a pile of other coaches to that list including Bowan......
- Senet1 : Hartley, was he a good coach or did he just have great players and one of the best altime goaltenders of all time. I am not sure that he is the type of coach that this organization needs right now. Unless of course we sign a ton of free agents.
- Avatar37 : However, my feelings may completely be wrong, Hartley may turn out to be a good fit.
- Avatar37 : I didn't say Hartley was unknown, I said we demoted a good coach in Cunneyworth and now have an unknown quantity because we don't have a coach. I don't have that great a feeling about Hartley, I'd be much more comfortable with Crawford.
- HabsLoseAgain : In my opinion i think he might be a good fit in montreal. Oh and he also likes to have a tough team.
- HabsLoseAgain : Also this year he coached the ZSC Lions to the swiss championship title.
- HabsLoseAgain : lol the so called "unknown" won a cup in 2000-2001 with the colarado avalanch.
- HabsLoseAgain : lol Bob Hartley is not an unknown lol.....sheesh.
- Senet1 : I think he has until the trading deadline to show us that he deserves to be on this team. If he does not get back on track then he could be simply a 2nd round draft pick to whoever we can trade him to.
- Avatar37 : Bourque reminds me of Pouliot, size, skill, and invisible. He needs to get back to playing a physical game and bang people around and maybe he'll start getting some of those garbage goals again. Need to get to the front of the net. I hope he can find his game again.
- Avatar37 : We had a good coach in Randy Cunneyworth. Now we have an unknown, with Bob Hartley rumoured to be the front runner. I'd rather have Cunneyworth.
- goalie : A player like Rene Bourwue has al the physical attributes of what would be a beter than average player. Hwever, he certainly didn't play that well especially after being in Montreal about three weeks. We NEED players like Rene to play hard AND produce points on a REGULAR BASIS in order for us to be competitive.
- Senet1 : MONTREAL – Rene Bourque had a rocky start to his career as a Hab, but he’s planning on using the next four years to make up for it. After arriving in Montreal under less-than-ideal circumstances in January, Bourque spent the following 38 games hoping to find the spark he needed to rekindle his offensive production. Despite flanking Tomas Plekanec on the team’s second line to close out the season, the 30-year-old sniper suddenly found himself firing blanks in his new NHL home.
- Senet1 : I think we have to be patient and not expect too much too soon. Let's get a strong management team in place, make a good choices in the draft get a good coach and then see what we need at the free agent market. I will not be too disapointed if we miss the playoffs again next year if it means a long term team success. We have the opportunity to make some major strides over the next two years at the draft table. Then we fill in the holes.
- goalie : I certainly agree that we need to get some impact forwards who will sign for 5 years, not for a season then walk away. That's not going to help us.
- goalie : I wouldn't trade PK for Ovetchkin no matter what. He is a coach's NIGHTMARE and a poor team player.

Guys,we have to win this one. I know that Toronto has their reasons too,but come on. No one really cares for the leafs lol.
November 27, 2007 at 4:31 pm
They maybe 14th but they can still beat the habs……
That’s the scary part……………
November 27, 2007 at 5:45 pm
Leafs 5, Habs 2. Toronto scores an empty net goal at the end.
Predictions are ridiculous, of course, but Toronto is going to be desperate and Montreal will probably be nonchalant like they have been for the past few games. If Toronto loses, then that’s the end of this team. If Montreal loses, Carbo will shake things up at the edges with a few demotions/promotions.
November 27, 2007 at 6:25 pm
I’ll tell you why I’m scared, it always seems that when every team in the league is beating the Leafs, our boys choke. Don’t get me wrong, that’s not my prediction. As long as we can score goals, we’ll be okay…I’m not worried about our defensive game tonight.
November 27, 2007 at 6:50 pm
There one in the front page that came up with a funny nick name for Guillaume latendresse.->GUY LATALENTLESS…looooooooooooooooooooooooooooll
November 27, 2007 at 8:18 pm
Hey: Jason Blake has more all star votes from “fans of the game” than Kovalev. Um. Jason Blake has only a few more goals this season in the NHL than I do.
November 27, 2007 at 9:20 pm
Well wasn’t that just a dramatic start– outshot 16-6 in the first period,
just another in a string of gutless performances by the Habs….did any player stand out in that period ?? other than a good job by Price, and a few good moves by Koivu, everyone else ??? Garbage !!!!
November 27, 2007 at 10:18 pm
Wish my French was better so I could watch in on RDS – can’t stand listening to Glen and gang
November 27, 2007 at 11:43 pm
how many games is it now they have pissed away in the dying seconds of a game ?
Koivu, sorry-but you have outstayed your welcome, you are paid to put the puck in the net, and you can no longer due that with any regularity, Sundin does you don’t…the facts speak for themselves, it’s time to move on.
Over all I’m not sure the Habs deserved 2 points for that effort–a totally
lousy first period, and even worse last minute of play, no way Leaf should
have received a point out of that mess.
November 28, 2007 at 2:35 am
Well that game summed up the word kayos for me,Lats did score one, lol;and the Zamboni incident, well I never seen that before !Kovalev,U are the man!I am worried at the prospect of playing Jersey, keep Price in net,GO HABS.
November 28, 2007 at 3:25 am
The Leafs didn’t play at all desperately–just looked like a normal game for them, and at home no less in spite of all the talk etc.
To get out-shot that badly against a team of Toronto’s caliber after having lost two in a row is not a good sign for the status quo. Don’t get me wrong, I think the Habs have the fundamentals of a good hockey team–good goalies, good defense, and a few forwards who can put the puck in the net (yes, they could use more scoring). But the problem here is under-performance; Latendresse played better tonight, but why are Smolinski and Ryder so scared of the corners? And why is Ryder more predictable than a good men’s league player? I’m sure they’ve told him to “simplify his game”, but surely that doesn’t entail snapshot after snapshot into shinpad after shinpad.
We’ve long known about Ryder’s defensive liabilities, and so without his scoring he’s simply a liability. And it may be telling that Koivu played so hard tonight after Ryder was taken off his line. Higgins is clearly hurt, but Koivu really seemed to pick up his effort tonight (minus the last shift).
Lastly, Markov can’t play so many critical situations without getting warn out at the end of the year. He’s unprotected and so the team’s are running him, and he’s doing way more than a sustainable amount for the team. It’s just a matter of time before exhaustion sets in or before he gets injured. Get a fighter, and a very scary one at that!

“Wish my French was better so I could watch in on RDS – can’t stand listening to Glen and gang”
I wish I had RDS, the only game that I could watch here in Buffalo was Calgary and Detroit. LOL
November 28, 2007 at 11:49 am
What a game, what better way to take advantage of a team that sucks in Shootouts then with a team that is one of the best in Shootouts. And Koveys 2 pp goals… WOW. Good game though, it was an awesome game to watch and probably alot better to be there.

Gillette should buy the Tampabay Lightning and trade Vinny to Montreal>>>>>>
November 28, 2007 at 4:58 pm
Gillette should buy the Tampabay Lightning and trade Vinny to Montreal>>>>>>
I totally agree with that statement. That would be awesome to see Vinny in the red, white and blue!
November 28, 2007 at 6:29 pm
Well he will be an UFA next year we can always hope.
November 28, 2007 at 6:49 pm
I’m not sure where you guys are located, but I live in Alberta and I bought Starchoice for RDS–I pay less than cable, I get better channels, and this year they started offering RDS as a separate channel (for like 3$ a month) rather than part of the French package. So I get all the Habs games for next to no money, and I still pay less than I did for cable…
November 28, 2007 at 10:21 pm
does anyone know if RDS is available in Vanc area??
Groundworking–I like what you have to say, I gotta check this out, I had starchoice and dumped it..it was just pissing money down a gopher hole,
15 channels all having the same program on at once, and that was repeated
over and over, I dumped it…..
I don’t think Tampa will let Vinny get away easy, he might not yet have a
no-trade clause…could possibly be a trade target for the Habs, sure would be nice to see.. earlier in the season before he started playing so well, I was kind of hoping his game wouldn’t come around to help the trade thing, but now he is smoking..he is a player the Habs need, fans would love him.
November 29, 2007 at 11:49 am
Vinny would be unreal… and Tampa will not be able to afford come 09-10
Lecavalier, Vincent C 27 6.875 187 6.875 6.000, 7.167, 7.167 for 07-08, 7.167 for 08-09, UFA for 09-10
He’s a high paid player, which we could afford for 08-09 or 09-10… all we could offer would be a mix of Huet, Ryder, + draft picks to trade him for next season… but I still don’t think Vinny will be a commodity Tampa would release, Richards possibly as he is overpaid and underproducing for the $$$ he’s making
Vinny in Red, white, and blue would be a dream for our team
November 29, 2007 at 1:55 pm
I agree about the repeated channels, especially for those in the WEST (we don’t get to time shift as much as they do out East, because all the good shows are over in the EAST when prime time hits out here). But the only reason I got Starchoice was to be able to watch Habs games on RDS–last year I had to buy the whole bilingual package for like 13$ a month, but this year they stopped even selling the bilingual package online and started selling RDS separately instead–I suspect b/c people complained about having to get all the French channels in order to get RDS.
I have one or two steps up from the basic channels, which gives me the news channels (CNN etc.), some stuff for my daughter (Treenhouse), Discovery, A&E, Showcase, Bravo, the Sports channels, the networks (and all the Canadian nets from all regions of the country), a bunch of other channels, plus RDS. I pay less than 60$ a month, and in the summer I usually cancel everything and pay only 19$ a month.
November 29, 2007 at 3:51 pm
I get RDS here in ontario with BELL EXPREES VU very cheap aswell i think only a few bucks a month.Star choice did not carry RDS going back a few years ago atleast not in ontario east anyways.
November 29, 2007 at 4:33 pm
K guys lets beat NewJersey tomorrow and get right back on a hot streak! Ryder is now on pace for 34 pts! he has to go!!!!! I don’t know how It will be done, but he will have to go soon!
November 29, 2007 at 7:23 pm
Yeah Pactum. Starchoice didn’t carry RDS even last year as a separate channel. I had go get the bilingual package and then a specific French option I believe. But they may not have carried it all a few years back anywhere–I suspect it’s standard right across the country (with the exception that we can’t get some X-rated and Horror Movie channels out here, such as Leafs TV).
The Habs need to pick up their game. I take more heart from good efforts and a loss than poor efforts and a win. The Leafs game was better than the Buffalo games, but still not good enough for the playoffs. Ryder will break out of his slump, though I think he’d be better in the minors getting some of his confidence back–he’d score a couple of goals every night. The guy is a goal scorer and it must really suck to have lost that ability so far this year.
November 29, 2007 at 7:35 pm
Bell expressvu has rds hd, you get some other french channels as well, $5 a month, well worth it. Every game in hd.
November 29, 2007 at 7:47 pm
Price get’s the start Friday
November 29, 2007 at 7:55 pm
Guys….I speculated last week ( see sabres post) that Recchi might come back….speculation tonight is Recchi for Halak, to be done by friday.
Now I know he’s an older guy, but WHAT a presense he is in the room, and one thing you can say for him is he always gives it 110% and leaves it out there on the ice. I for one would love to see him back. I can certainly see a few spots on the roster where he’d fit in quite nicely.
November 29, 2007 at 8:31 pm
We could get recchi for a late pick no doubt or he might even be put on waivers in my opinion. Why on earth would gainey give up halak? Maybe if our GM’s name was john ferguson jr.
November 29, 2007 at 10:02 pm
I’d trade Halek for Recchi. Halek isn’t doing too well in the AHL, we already have Price, and the team may lose Halek anyway to dissatisfaction stemming from what he sees as a demotion this year. I have also heard that Recchi has said he expects to be traded this week, but this is the first I’ve heard of the Montreal rumor. Nice work digging that up!
November 29, 2007 at 10:04 pm
Are you speculating or reporting a rumor? If just speculation, then I’d probably disagree. I think he’ll go to Ottawa. If you are not speculating, then I’ll believe you, though. And if you’re speculating and turn out to be correct, then please speculate more!
November 29, 2007 at 10:08 pm
If you all go with the FTA satellite system; then you’ll see every Habs game. I have the FTA and I haven’t missed a Habs game all year.
November 29, 2007 at 10:10 pm
Just checked NHL stats machine. No deal! For God sake, we do not need an 8 point veteran on the team with so much youth fighting for a spot. I tend to forget that people get older, and that getting older starts to be a bad thing at a certain age.
November 29, 2007 at 10:48 pm
#3- HabsFan4life
I have not heard of the FTA system, is it avail everywhere?
I’d pay the bucks to catch all the Habs games.
Thanks
November 29, 2007 at 10:49 pm
Sorry..I meant post # 30 not 3
November 29, 2007 at 11:25 pm
Last week, I was speculating. Today I am following Pierre Maguire,Mr. Richardson of Spectors, and Eklund the idiot,so I guess I am reiterating rumors I have read…..
I’m only the messenger remember.
Its true Recchi has had a slow year. I guess the only thing I remember is how he played against the habs this year….dammit, what a pest I remember saying.I still think he would dig up more pucks than Ryder playing with Koivu and Higgy, and can certainly handle the puck better. If you look closely at those stats, you’ll see that he was not playing with the likes of Crosby or Malkin, or even staal ( spelling) for that matter. I’m sure ( and I know I’m the only one that feels this way)that he would generate some loose pucks with his speed ( still #3 skater on the pens with speed this year in team contests)as opposed to Ryder giving it away when he has lots of time to make a pass.I for one would take him for now, just for his room presense and dont think he would mess up chemistry, but rather would enhance it.
my two cents….
still say you’ll see him here, maybe even for the weekend against Nashville who ( god blessem ) beat Ottawa tonight ( 5 in a row)
