Your ideal Sheldon Souray Trade
-
Six days remain to see whether or not Sheldon Souray will be traded.
So put yourselves in Bob Gainey’s shoes and make the deal.
Does Souray go alone and who do you go after in return?
The team with most heavy interest is rumored to be the Sharks who have just coincidentally recalled Steve Bernier.
Is it a Souray for Bernier swap? More players or picks involved? Or is Souray going somewhere altogether different?

- Senet1 : It will be interesting to see how Sutter does because to me the Oilers are not his kind of team, but then again neither were the Flames.
- goalie : I don't know when they'll announce it but the Oilers will be signing Sutter (Flames ex-coach) to coach their team - that's why Kevin Lowe chose him to coach in the World's. That was the world's worst kept secret.
- Senet1 : I guess I wish we could get it done so all the speculating was over and we can get to building out team.
- goalie : I can't type.... what a faux pas on my behalf...
- goalie : I just realized what I said adn didn't say yesterday. What a fayx as on my behalf. Regarding coaching Randy Cunnyworth MUSDT stay as an assistant- he deserves at least that after the tremendous job he did in the latter part of this past season. I'd still mlike to have Robinson, Carbo adn Allard on the staff also.
- Avatar37 : I agree Senet, my choice if we can't have Cunneyworth would be Crawford, Robinson on defense, Cunneyworth for offense, and Carbo as offense/faceoffs .
- Senet1 : I think if I had my choice it would be Crawford and see if he could get Carbo and Robinson as assistants. That would be my idea coaching team.
- goalie : I witnesed Marc Crawford MANY times when the Avs, etc. played against Oilers and let me tell you - he is constantly on the referees asses virtually game after game. He is the complete OPPOSITE of J. Martin. Crawford is calm on TSN but he is one excited coach behind the bench. A friend of mine who was an NHL linesman for 26 years said they dreaded Crawford he was so tough on the officials!
- goalie : You know, I've bee thinking about the coaching situation. I'd be really excited if the Habs had Hartley as head coach and Carbo adn Robinson as his assistants. I also read it somewhere about a month ago that Toronto's goalie coach Allard (?) wants to relocate back to Montreal where he has his goaltending school/business. Add him to the mix and I'd say the Habs would be in great shape coaching wise.
- Avatar37 : Well, from what I recall, Hartley didn't do all that well with the Thrashers. But, I don't know enough about him to judge one way or the other. Crawford I do know, and he always seemed to be a good, level headed coach to me.
- Senet1 : even Pacioretty two years ago did not impress any of us. Younger players have to play and make mistakes and learn from those mistakes. If they sit in the press box they are learning nothing.
- Senet1 : Of course if he have some good assistants like a Larry Robinson to teach the young defence and someone like Carbo to teach faceoffs etc. then your coach does not have to be as good at teaching. If Hartley fits the bill you get no argument from me. My only previous point is that if he is impatient with your younger players to the point that he does not play them, then we are right back where we were with Martin. Martin was a good coach too, but how he handled Emelin, PK and even Pacioretty two
- goalie : I would like to see the Habs sign a coach who realizes that our team isn't tough enough (we need to get bigger and somewhat more nastier),the coach needs t be a great TEACHER and be a coach who can get the players to understand and buy into his system. Other than that I couldn't care what lingo he speaks. I wnat to see our team become a ligitimate contender fast!
- HabsLoseAgain : Well we dont know if he is or is not a teaching coach. I woukd just hate to paint Hartley something that he is not. There will always be questions but if Hartley was hired as the habs new bench boss i for one would not be overly upset.
- Senet1 : My thoughts are not that he is or is not a good coach but rather that when he won the cup he had an experience team of superstars on that team. Where as we have a group of young inexperienced players, is he a teaching coach or a tactical coach or both? I am not question whether he is a good coach, but my question therefore is he the coach for us at this point in the deveopment of our team?? Not sure we are all purely speculating at the moment?
- Senet1 : Something happened to my first post. I will try again.
- Senet1 : That is why I said I am not sure he is the coach for us at this time? Right now we are all speculating including yourself, because non of us know for sure?
- HabsLoseAgain : Crawford also won a cup with Patrick Roy so would you say he is a good coach or did he just have great players and one of the best goaltenders of alltime?
- HabsLoseAgain : Senrt so please give me some reasons why you think Hartley is not the coach the habs need right now. What is it that you do not like about him or his coaching style?
- HabsLoseAgain : Well all great coaches had great players playing for them so i guess you you add a a pile of other coaches to that list including Bowan......
- Senet1 : Hartley, was he a good coach or did he just have great players and one of the best altime goaltenders of all time. I am not sure that he is the type of coach that this organization needs right now. Unless of course we sign a ton of free agents.
- Avatar37 : However, my feelings may completely be wrong, Hartley may turn out to be a good fit.
- Avatar37 : I didn't say Hartley was unknown, I said we demoted a good coach in Cunneyworth and now have an unknown quantity because we don't have a coach. I don't have that great a feeling about Hartley, I'd be much more comfortable with Crawford.
- HabsLoseAgain : In my opinion i think he might be a good fit in montreal. Oh and he also likes to have a tough team.
- HabsLoseAgain : Also this year he coached the ZSC Lions to the swiss championship title.
- HabsLoseAgain : lol the so called "unknown" won a cup in 2000-2001 with the colarado avalanch.
- HabsLoseAgain : lol Bob Hartley is not an unknown lol.....sheesh.
- Senet1 : I think he has until the trading deadline to show us that he deserves to be on this team. If he does not get back on track then he could be simply a 2nd round draft pick to whoever we can trade him to.
- Avatar37 : Bourque reminds me of Pouliot, size, skill, and invisible. He needs to get back to playing a physical game and bang people around and maybe he'll start getting some of those garbage goals again. Need to get to the front of the net. I hope he can find his game again.
- Avatar37 : We had a good coach in Randy Cunneyworth. Now we have an unknown, with Bob Hartley rumoured to be the front runner. I'd rather have Cunneyworth.
- goalie : A player like Rene Bourwue has al the physical attributes of what would be a beter than average player. Hwever, he certainly didn't play that well especially after being in Montreal about three weeks. We NEED players like Rene to play hard AND produce points on a REGULAR BASIS in order for us to be competitive.
- Senet1 : MONTREAL – Rene Bourque had a rocky start to his career as a Hab, but he’s planning on using the next four years to make up for it. After arriving in Montreal under less-than-ideal circumstances in January, Bourque spent the following 38 games hoping to find the spark he needed to rekindle his offensive production. Despite flanking Tomas Plekanec on the team’s second line to close out the season, the 30-year-old sniper suddenly found himself firing blanks in his new NHL home.
- Senet1 : I think we have to be patient and not expect too much too soon. Let's get a strong management team in place, make a good choices in the draft get a good coach and then see what we need at the free agent market. I will not be too disapointed if we miss the playoffs again next year if it means a long term team success. We have the opportunity to make some major strides over the next two years at the draft table. Then we fill in the holes.
- goalie : I certainly agree that we need to get some impact forwards who will sign for 5 years, not for a season then walk away. That's not going to help us.
- goalie : I wouldn't trade PK for Ovetchkin no matter what. He is a coach's NIGHTMARE and a poor team player.

The way it works in the real world, that is every where else other than Montreal, if you are ****, then you get sent down to the farm team as compost. In Montreal if you are **** you get an automatic 1.7 million dollar contract for two years. The rookies have learnt all you have to do is survive and then whompf one day you get the big one, and then you become Rivet, Dandy and Boully, automatic Lotto 6/49….life is good under Bob Gainey’s Lotto 6/49.
Too bad Montreal can’t send their used has been millionaires down to the dogs….oh no, we gotta be the United nations of Hockey, UNICEF for the NHL….

Souray for Bryan Smolinski and Adrian Aucoin?
February 22, 2007 at 5:15 pm
I say don’t even consider trading Souray. Trade anyone everyone, but not Souray, and of course, not Pleks, not Bonk, not Halak, trade Youpie, trade Carbo, trade Bob Gainey, trade even the poutine wagon guy if you have to, but not Souray. That is taboo, how can we as Habs fans even consider that? Unless we get something really worthwhile. Aucoin has a big paycheck and he trails a damn defibrilator, life support system and his own personal surgeon, honestly. Oh wait, I’m suprised Gainey didn’t jump on that one.
February 22, 2007 at 5:27 pm
JOsh I agree with you. Gsinaey should be more interested in pushing players like RIvet and Sammy right now. IF you can get anything for them (3rd rounder or prospect) then do it. IT wont be giving up on the season and will help the future slightly. Send Sammy to Stoney Mountain for all I care. Souray needs to stay. Matt Carle is a nice prospect but Souray is just too darn important. Not just for this season. HE is by far my #1 hab and anyone who still questions his defensive play obviously has not been watching the games since christmas.
February 22, 2007 at 5:28 pm
To Stoney Mt: Samsonov
To MOntreal : Carton of cigerettes
February 22, 2007 at 5:29 pm
Funny thing is Souray has been just as prone to injury as anyone. God forbid such a notion, but I could not imagine the amount of “I told you so’s” that would be out there… Anyway, We do not have enough cap room for Smolinski and Aucoin with Souray’s Salary alone.
February 22, 2007 at 5:44 pm
What the Phoque? Higgy the star of our great win, the heartbeat in Koivu’s non-existant line? And we keep Ninny and the other deadbeats? Granted I am a big fan of the rookies, but to send Higgy out when we have others who deserve to be benched? Honestly, isn’t that sad? Now I know the habs have gone to the dogs, is there no bottom to Bob Gainey’s depravity?
February 22, 2007 at 5:44 pm
Snake – I think Souray’s improved and he was instrumental in revitalizing this team. I have to believe Gainey would only move him if he knew he had no chance of resigning him and like you said, even then it would be hard to make a move because he has been key point man and offensive threat. Send down or trade Sammy, murray, and Perez to allow some room for the youngsters which have added to this revival of energy. (although murray has become an offensive threat himself
)
February 22, 2007 at 5:46 pm
Higgy is hurt… not a 100%
February 22, 2007 at 5:47 pm
You need help.
February 22, 2007 at 5:51 pm
I knew he was a bit hurt, that is shocking. The only hab to actually stand in front of the teams’ goalie, now who else is gonna help score goals in the new NHL way? You know screen the other goalie. Kosty is good but if there is anyone else who plays like Higgy its Grabby….
February 22, 2007 at 5:53 pm
The voices in my head tell me otherwise?!?!? LOL

http://www.habsinsideout.com/ Gainey reporting there is “No trade imminent” to the press… but did not rule it out completely.
February 22, 2007 at 6:57 pm
This was posted on Spector’s trade rumors today:
“On CJAD radio in Montreal this morning Michael Farber mentioned Sheldon Souray for Matt Carle. According to Farber, a star player on the Sharks said that it was going around the dressing room and was “a done deal”. Farber sees Carle as a Chelios-type player, and no one could begrudge Gainey for trading a guy who likely has 20 games left in a Habs uniform – even if he is the top scorer – for a potential franchise defenceman.”
This would be a great deal as long as the Sharks through in a little something extra like a first round pick or a young forward. I think, even though it would be great, we’re dreaming to think we could get Carle AND Bernier.
It’s time for most of you people to come to grips with the fact that Souray isn’t coming back. He wants 7-7.5 million from the Habs(which he isn’t worth. He’s not Pronger/Niedermayer/Lidstrom calibre, he’s injury prone. This is his frist completely healthy season.) but he’ll take less to head out to the west coast to be with his daughter.
Bob, it’s time to make this deal. No matter what the majority of the fans think. It’s the best thing for the future of this franchise.
February 22, 2007 at 7:00 pm
Also, Jaques Demers said that Souray has told team management that he’s guarranteed to test Free Agency. So there’s a 99% chance Souray will be dealt, probably to San Jose.
February 22, 2007 at 7:25 pm
To San Jose: Souray, Ryder
To Montreal: Matt Carle, M-Edouard Vlasic, Pavelski
Then in the Off-Season let Niniima and Rivet walk…and Abby. Take Halak up sign him 3 yrs 675,000$ a yr.
February 22, 2007 at 7:44 pm
Hey we were ready to pay through the nose for Forsberg to score the same number of goals that Souray has already done. Listen to yourselves. Gainey may think Souray is not a defenseman, but Gainey is outscoring our fowards. Honestly, he is even scoring more than our highest paid player if you look at power plays etc. If we are ready to pay 7 million for a 20 goal scorer who is untried, we already have a 20 goal scorer on the team, his name is Souray.
I could see getting rid of Ninny and Rivet if only to free up millions towards next year.
But the Vlasic, Pavelski, Carle trio, that would be a bonus, a tough deal to turn down if it went that way. In a way Gainey may have no choice, the unthinkable, getting rid of Souray to spend the same amount of money next year for someone who may not score that many goals. I wouldn’t want to be in Gainey’s boots now, but the simple and quick thing to do, is nothing. Which is probably what Gainey will do if he cannot get Aucoin for Sammy and Rivet.
February 22, 2007 at 7:54 pm
Aucoin, gimme a break. As much as some of you think Gainey only goes out and get’s broken down players, that not entirely true.
Altough I think we can all agree that Sammy was a massive mistake. Giving Kovy a four year deal was a mistake, all he is is a hired gun now at this stage in his career.
Ninnamaa, while he does suck, is only hear because Ribeiro and the Habs needed fresh starts from each other.
Johnson is sevearly underrated. He was brought in to be a defensive speacialist on the third line with Bonk, and since he’s one of the two MTL players with a +/- over ten I think it’s safe to say that worked out.
Adrian Aucoin is dirt. He makes four million a year to get injured and suck in Chicago. He’s their Alexei Kovalev.
Gainey’s learned from his mistakes. Don’t expect any Russians or probably Europeans signed in general to long term deals besides Pleks and Markov by the Habs.
This summer Gainey will try and with some of that Theo trade magic, find a couple of Suckers to take Sammy and Kovy off his hands cause they think they can ‘resurrect’ them.
And Frank, San Jose Management has said that Vlasic is untouchable. They won’t get him.
February 22, 2007 at 7:57 pm
Yeah, getting rid of him would be very hard to do, but i think it’s essentially a necessity, unless Gainey REALLY believes the Habs can go all the way. Trade Souray and get something for him, before he walks and you get nothing. The Black Hole (Ryder) has picked up his game, a great 3 point game vs the Caps, he keeps playing well, maybe we keep him, or trade him while his value is high. Who Knows, it’s all in Gainey’s hands!
February 22, 2007 at 8:13 pm
well gainey pretty much said he’s not getting rid of any young players or prospects. that’s encouraging.
February 22, 2007 at 8:24 pm
Excuse me? Johnson underated? He is paid outrageously, what lets see if he keeps up at this rate he’ll be lucky to get 30 points for his salary, that works out to just under 70 grand per point. If you look at the number of goals against when Johnson is on the ice (almost everytime there is a goal Johnson was either on the ice or in the play leading up to the turnover) versus the number of goals he has scored…where is the investment? How is he underated? Maybe underated as a professional maybe in that Johnson is no better than a rookie, and he is a veteran for gods’ sake!
February 22, 2007 at 8:44 pm
Gainey’s big announcement was to say he is considering signing his current crop of players, including Ninnima. If Gainey renews Ninnima then we know the season is shot, either that or Gainey is looking at trading a number of players who are facing the prospect of not being signed again. If we follow Gainey’s track record that could only mean, instead of trading for a decent defense or center, Gainey will reward people like Ninnima with raises.
February 22, 2007 at 8:56 pm
Actually, Gainey’s announcement was to say that he’s undicided on what to do right now.
I’d love to know we’re you read him say that he wants to sign Ninnamaa.
February 22, 2007 at 9:05 pm
SCOTT NIEDERMAYER:+8 , Chris Pronger:+22 , Nick Lidstrom:+42
Sheldon Souray:-15
Anyone who says Souray is in the same league as these three is ignoring the prove in front of their eyes.
Oh, and Mike Johnson leads the Habs with +13, only Perezhogin is even close. He’s a defensive speacialist. He’s does his job spectaculairly.
February 22, 2007 at 9:07 pm
Yes I agree Johnson gets knocked down +13 times per game, Mike spends more time on his butt then defending the zone, he’s pretty good at falling down going up and down.
February 22, 2007 at 9:08 pm
Souray ‘s been the only positive result the habs have Had this year !
February 22, 2007 at 9:09 pm
Yup, I agree he is a specialist. You know special cause he’s fluid, you know when he gets hit he falls down pretty good. Too bad the definition of a defenseman is stop the other team, not limp noodle them to death +13s per game…
February 22, 2007 at 9:15 pm
It’s official, the refs hate Montreal. That call on Markov was absolute Bullshit! Erat ran over Halak on his own and the refs don’t even blow the wistle when his mask get’s knocked off like they’re supposed to.
The refs hate the Habs and the majority of they’re calls on them are pure B.S.
February 22, 2007 at 9:16 pm
Oh ya, I can just hear Bob Gainey, “well you know of course I religiously read the Habs blog, I listened to Joshtm and finally brought up Kosty, and then I traded Souray because Habs#1 pointed out that Souray has fallen behind Pronger, and have traded him for the last round pick, and the habs will cover Sheldon’s salary in which ever team will take him, we are after all the UNICEF of hockey”…oh ya….and finally Gainey adds “I have signed Johnson to a 26 million dollar six year contract because Habs#1 has pointed out he is +13 or 2 million ever six months that he plays, yup he is worth 26 million bucks”….
February 22, 2007 at 9:20 pm
Your an egomaniacal idiot and please don’t refer to me anymore for your own sake. You just sound stupid:
‘Oh Bob Gainey frequents habsblog.com and I traded anyone over the age of 27 cause joshtm told me to then I made Guillaume Latendresse captain cause he’s young and he’s french, gosh he’s so smart’
Just shut up.
February 22, 2007 at 9:23 pm
I hope Souray packed for more then just a two game road trip. He’s gone to San Jose within the next 3 days.
After the shitkicking they’re getting tonight Gainey has to know that he has to re-tool for next year.
Or we could keep Souray, lose him to free agency and finish in 7th-10 place for the next 5 years. Yay we just barely made the playoffs again.
February 22, 2007 at 9:25 pm
Well, I feel bad for the rookies, getting thrown to the Lions tonite.
February 22, 2007 at 9:28 pm
Oh ya and Johnson is so good that we can trade Souray, you are just ridiculous for your own good.
Thanks God Koivu hasn’t lost the touch. If he and Ryder can just keep the magic going, at least they would finally work for their zillions of dollars.
Yup…Habs#1 is all for trading Souray cause we have Johnson….
February 22, 2007 at 9:31 pm
Next big piece of info is Ninnima is such a great forward we can give him a raise, any other great tid bits you want to add? How about Downie’s plus 50 rating, that is Downie gets that much points for just showing up. Oh ya, Habs#1 the protector of the underdog habs…
February 22, 2007 at 9:34 pm
This coming from the guy who kept complaining that Souray kept knocking over his own goalie?
Stop contradicting yourself, you just sound stupid.
February 22, 2007 at 9:34 pm
Just heard on CJAD…Bob Gainey, “well Habs#1 pointed out Johnson is so great, I have traded Lapierre, Lat and Milroy away so I can have some salary space to give Johnson a raise, since he can do everything I have also traded away Souray, and also let Halak go because Johnson is such a defensive specialist..” oh ya, that Habs#1 is such an astute fan…
February 22, 2007 at 9:34 pm
That’s it. I’m sick of arguing with a moron. See ya. Hope you enjoy arguing with yourself!
February 22, 2007 at 9:35 pm
The cup is Nashville’s this year !
February 22, 2007 at 9:39 pm
You know in playing back the games in the slump, yes Souray did indeed on more than one occasion knock his own goalie over, good point there Habs#1. But hey in the same period of time, Souray also led the league in short handed goals. What great record does Johnson have? HUH? Why should we give up Souray? Because Johnson is plus 13? Gee for Johnson to play so well here, he musta really sucked in the other teams, but heck when you are -30, averaging +13 means you are breathing….just breathing.
February 22, 2007 at 9:43 pm
I don’t know, I haven’t seen Johnson score any short handed goals. He doesn’t have a booming shot. He can’t even check players, all Johnson is good at is a kamikazi rush where he gets knocked down, or the occasional lucky pass to someone like Streit, that is even if Johnson can finish a pass. Johnson can’t even take a puck away, his pathetic stick checking sucks too…I can’t see why Habs#1 loves Johnson….
February 22, 2007 at 9:45 pm
You have an unhealthy obsession with Mike Johnson.
February 22, 2007 at 9:52 pm

February 22, 2007 at 9:53 pm
You know the way a deer looks just before you hit it with you’re car, that will be the 2nd. See the highlites of the Sabres vs Sens … wow.
February 22, 2007 at 9:58 pm
not bad 1st period. i like to see the jump in the habs step. this is turning out to be a pretty good game. if the habs come out in the second like they did in the first this game should be real close. gotta go down to block shots from the d though, halak is having a hard time with deflections. go boys go. samsonov coming around??? where’s higgins??? and last but not least> if carbo switches the koivu ryder pairing we’re screwed. let the boys play!!! go habs go
February 22, 2007 at 10:05 pm
Don’t worry R Habs, our superhero fan Habs#1 has the answer, play Johnson, he is a “defensive specialist” and after all Johnson has somehow miraculously managed to get a +13 rating in the habs 6 game slide….gee that’s like Koivu turning a power play into a 3 against 5, wonders, great wonders of the world.
Actually I think Gainey is in a great denial. He thinks like Habs#1 because we have Johnson and now even Ninnima is playing forward that there is nothing wrong in the world. Oh no, Gainey is gonna reward these underachieving defensemen with a raise.
Never mind a trade, oh no, Gainey is pondering giving all these guys a bonus for pulling off a mediocre season. I guess Gainey gets a bonus for finishing the season regardless if the habs finish first or last.
No incentive to win, this Gainey guy.
February 22, 2007 at 10:07 pm
I wonder what kinda upper body injury Higgy got. What a shame. And he rocked on the Koivu line too!
February 22, 2007 at 10:11 pm
The Habs pull of a miracle and win this one ,bet U Kovalev’s elbow mysteriously gets better.
February 22, 2007 at 10:22 pm
Holy **** Murray scored a nice one !!
