Sheldon Souray signs with Edmonton Oilers
-
The ex-hab has signed a contract with the Oilers and not with Anaheim, Los Angeles or San Jose as heavily speculated all year.
Souray wanted out of Montreal – signing in Edmonton for the same money Montreal offered. $27 Million over 5 years.
In doing so Souray an Alberta native returns to his home province and about as far away as you can get from the Montreal media.

- Senet1 : It will be interesting to see how Sutter does because to me the Oilers are not his kind of team, but then again neither were the Flames.
- goalie : I don't know when they'll announce it but the Oilers will be signing Sutter (Flames ex-coach) to coach their team - that's why Kevin Lowe chose him to coach in the World's. That was the world's worst kept secret.
- Senet1 : I guess I wish we could get it done so all the speculating was over and we can get to building out team.
- goalie : I can't type.... what a faux pas on my behalf...
- goalie : I just realized what I said adn didn't say yesterday. What a fayx as on my behalf. Regarding coaching Randy Cunnyworth MUSDT stay as an assistant- he deserves at least that after the tremendous job he did in the latter part of this past season. I'd still mlike to have Robinson, Carbo adn Allard on the staff also.
- Avatar37 : I agree Senet, my choice if we can't have Cunneyworth would be Crawford, Robinson on defense, Cunneyworth for offense, and Carbo as offense/faceoffs .
- Senet1 : I think if I had my choice it would be Crawford and see if he could get Carbo and Robinson as assistants. That would be my idea coaching team.
- goalie : I witnesed Marc Crawford MANY times when the Avs, etc. played against Oilers and let me tell you - he is constantly on the referees asses virtually game after game. He is the complete OPPOSITE of J. Martin. Crawford is calm on TSN but he is one excited coach behind the bench. A friend of mine who was an NHL linesman for 26 years said they dreaded Crawford he was so tough on the officials!
- goalie : You know, I've bee thinking about the coaching situation. I'd be really excited if the Habs had Hartley as head coach and Carbo adn Robinson as his assistants. I also read it somewhere about a month ago that Toronto's goalie coach Allard (?) wants to relocate back to Montreal where he has his goaltending school/business. Add him to the mix and I'd say the Habs would be in great shape coaching wise.
- Avatar37 : Well, from what I recall, Hartley didn't do all that well with the Thrashers. But, I don't know enough about him to judge one way or the other. Crawford I do know, and he always seemed to be a good, level headed coach to me.
- Senet1 : even Pacioretty two years ago did not impress any of us. Younger players have to play and make mistakes and learn from those mistakes. If they sit in the press box they are learning nothing.
- Senet1 : Of course if he have some good assistants like a Larry Robinson to teach the young defence and someone like Carbo to teach faceoffs etc. then your coach does not have to be as good at teaching. If Hartley fits the bill you get no argument from me. My only previous point is that if he is impatient with your younger players to the point that he does not play them, then we are right back where we were with Martin. Martin was a good coach too, but how he handled Emelin, PK and even Pacioretty two
- goalie : I would like to see the Habs sign a coach who realizes that our team isn't tough enough (we need to get bigger and somewhat more nastier),the coach needs t be a great TEACHER and be a coach who can get the players to understand and buy into his system. Other than that I couldn't care what lingo he speaks. I wnat to see our team become a ligitimate contender fast!
- HabsLoseAgain : Well we dont know if he is or is not a teaching coach. I woukd just hate to paint Hartley something that he is not. There will always be questions but if Hartley was hired as the habs new bench boss i for one would not be overly upset.
- Senet1 : My thoughts are not that he is or is not a good coach but rather that when he won the cup he had an experience team of superstars on that team. Where as we have a group of young inexperienced players, is he a teaching coach or a tactical coach or both? I am not question whether he is a good coach, but my question therefore is he the coach for us at this point in the deveopment of our team?? Not sure we are all purely speculating at the moment?
- Senet1 : Something happened to my first post. I will try again.
- Senet1 : That is why I said I am not sure he is the coach for us at this time? Right now we are all speculating including yourself, because non of us know for sure?
- HabsLoseAgain : Crawford also won a cup with Patrick Roy so would you say he is a good coach or did he just have great players and one of the best goaltenders of alltime?
- HabsLoseAgain : Senrt so please give me some reasons why you think Hartley is not the coach the habs need right now. What is it that you do not like about him or his coaching style?
- HabsLoseAgain : Well all great coaches had great players playing for them so i guess you you add a a pile of other coaches to that list including Bowan......
- Senet1 : Hartley, was he a good coach or did he just have great players and one of the best altime goaltenders of all time. I am not sure that he is the type of coach that this organization needs right now. Unless of course we sign a ton of free agents.
- Avatar37 : However, my feelings may completely be wrong, Hartley may turn out to be a good fit.
- Avatar37 : I didn't say Hartley was unknown, I said we demoted a good coach in Cunneyworth and now have an unknown quantity because we don't have a coach. I don't have that great a feeling about Hartley, I'd be much more comfortable with Crawford.
- HabsLoseAgain : In my opinion i think he might be a good fit in montreal. Oh and he also likes to have a tough team.
- HabsLoseAgain : Also this year he coached the ZSC Lions to the swiss championship title.
- HabsLoseAgain : lol the so called "unknown" won a cup in 2000-2001 with the colarado avalanch.
- HabsLoseAgain : lol Bob Hartley is not an unknown lol.....sheesh.
- Senet1 : I think he has until the trading deadline to show us that he deserves to be on this team. If he does not get back on track then he could be simply a 2nd round draft pick to whoever we can trade him to.
- Avatar37 : Bourque reminds me of Pouliot, size, skill, and invisible. He needs to get back to playing a physical game and bang people around and maybe he'll start getting some of those garbage goals again. Need to get to the front of the net. I hope he can find his game again.
- Avatar37 : We had a good coach in Randy Cunneyworth. Now we have an unknown, with Bob Hartley rumoured to be the front runner. I'd rather have Cunneyworth.
- goalie : A player like Rene Bourwue has al the physical attributes of what would be a beter than average player. Hwever, he certainly didn't play that well especially after being in Montreal about three weeks. We NEED players like Rene to play hard AND produce points on a REGULAR BASIS in order for us to be competitive.
- Senet1 : MONTREAL – Rene Bourque had a rocky start to his career as a Hab, but he’s planning on using the next four years to make up for it. After arriving in Montreal under less-than-ideal circumstances in January, Bourque spent the following 38 games hoping to find the spark he needed to rekindle his offensive production. Despite flanking Tomas Plekanec on the team’s second line to close out the season, the 30-year-old sniper suddenly found himself firing blanks in his new NHL home.
- Senet1 : I think we have to be patient and not expect too much too soon. Let's get a strong management team in place, make a good choices in the draft get a good coach and then see what we need at the free agent market. I will not be too disapointed if we miss the playoffs again next year if it means a long term team success. We have the opportunity to make some major strides over the next two years at the draft table. Then we fill in the holes.
- goalie : I certainly agree that we need to get some impact forwards who will sign for 5 years, not for a season then walk away. That's not going to help us.
- goalie : I wouldn't trade PK for Ovetchkin no matter what. He is a coach's NIGHTMARE and a poor team player.

Well i hate to see souray gone but i wish him the best in edmonton. Thanks shelly we will all miss your big shot and leadership.
July 12, 2007 at 5:10 pm
I will miss Souray because of his cannon shot but he was a defensive liability and someone who you could go around as if he were a pylon. He wore the CH with pride and for that reason I will miss him but otherwise I am not very upset to see him leave. At least he went to another Canadian team and did not end up in L.A. or San Jose as speculated. Hey, he is an Alberta native so he knows all about cold weather, and it is even colder in Edmonton than it is in Montreal so he will feel right at home there. He obviously wanted to be closer to his family, that is why he went there. Sheldon, all the best to you in Edmonton and thank you for the past 6 seasons in a Montreal jersey.

Souray=TRAITOR!
July 12, 2007 at 8:24 pm
The Habs will miss Souray, his leadership and his shot. Though everyone keeps harping on his defense, I think its a red herring. Fact is that he was played too much 5-5 on a team that couldn’t score at even strength last year (despite Souray). Sure, he’s not the defenseman who stays at home all the time… a lot of those minuses were Sheldon trying to lead a rush and being stuck in between the opposition.
It will be interesting to see how he does next season, but I fully expect him to hav much more respectable +/- numbers, less ice time and 10 fewer goals (at least). That is, if he’s not hurt.
Bottom line, I’m very sad to see him go and wish him the best (though with that money, I can’t believe he really cares how we might feel!)
Hope the habs can find someone to score some goals or it will be an ugly season…
July 12, 2007 at 8:34 pm
Oilers fan here, I just have a question about his marital status. Is Sheldon married and if so, does she live with him?
After the Pronger fiasco, Oilers fans all over are wondering if his wife will like it there.
July 12, 2007 at 8:37 pm
Souray=overrated.
He won’t be missed as much as people think.
July 12, 2007 at 9:00 pm
Hockey is not a one-man show. Every player can leave and join.
Souray can earn a retired jersey at Edmonton easier than any other places.
Oiler (or Calgary) is his best choice for his destination: A native Albertan, and Métis, he has no competition to be honored and much more.
July 12, 2007 at 9:02 pm
I’m sure he’ll like the swinging social scene in Edmonton compared to Montreal. Edmonton is a real diverse city with a European feel and charm, located right here in North America!
Oh wait – that’s Montreal.
Edmonton is a small, boring, box-store littered city trapped in the middle of an endless frozen tundra.
Good luck with that Sheldon! Maybe with 27 million you can buy yourself a lifestyle!
And for those of you who think that he was a defensive liability – just think of what he’ll be like with a four year security belt before he has to score 20 goals again.
I think Lowe’s lost his mind. People complain about Gainey, but this guy is going batshit looney out there.
July 12, 2007 at 9:51 pm
What a joke. Souray is getting less than Hammerlicker? Anyone who feels Gainey should keep his job now should hang at Variety Village. With their intellectual peers.
July 12, 2007 at 10:29 pm
Leaving Montreal for Edmonton doesn’t say very much for Montreal. I have a feeling that the two teams’ fanbases will be neck and neck for the title of “most embarrassed fans” this year. Since, you know, the Coyotes and Panthers lost all hope years ago.
July 12, 2007 at 10:42 pm
Agreed nigelski. And isn’t it funny that he joins a team that won’t be playing the Habs this year. This is a show to all Habs fans ,the inside workings of the man and his loyalities, after all a lot of bloggers figured he would go to L.A . to be with his family.I don’t care what anybody say’s man,we just lost a great friend and for no ******* reason.W H A T A J O K E ! ! !
July 13, 2007 at 12:09 am
The reality is this…
if the season starts on a positive note and the expectations come to fruition, then things will go by the way side. I figure talk of Sheldon moving on, Samsonov shipping out, Rivet long gone, Bonk & Johnson departure…all will go without a double take….however, if the losing streak starts early then we can hear the grumblings!
Let’s face it, Kovalev’s got to pull his weight and make a difference. Ryder has to show up and hit the side of the barn more often. Higgins has got to play with more panache. Plekanez got to continue moving up the charts. Lapierre, Latendresse, Kostitsyn, have to put in greater effort with more results and consistency. The goalies have to play standing on their heads and steal games. I suspect there’s one more big trade to happen…Marleau, Lecavalier, Connely (kings), Gagne, (I would’ve wished for Smith)…just depends on what the bait might be.
in anticipation of the start of the season…with much angst!!!
July 13, 2007 at 12:37 am
Well, I am disappointed that Souray jumped ship, but then again Bob Gainey didn’t move fast enough. I love Gainey and have watched him for years. I just don’t think that Markov was worth 22 or 23 million. I think that could of been cut in half between a him and Souray. I felt Souray was very much an addition to the teama and a leader. Gainey should of made Souray a top priority as well, but I still love ya bob! Good luck Sheldon, you will be missed. You won’t win the Stanley cup going to Edmonton( wink).

im not from edmonton, but ive heard great things about the city.
although there is speculation that players dont like the city rumours are rumours
and infact are ONLY rumours
players who have left the city, like georges laraque still have homes in the city and think of it as a great place to live & raise children
chris pronger- is an example that often comes up. but in interviews he has many times stated the reason for his departure was due to family reasons and that the playing in edmonton was one of the best years he ever had playing hockey (although, now that he was a cup with the ducks his ideas might have changed)
ive visited the city many times because family of mine lives there
they are a very united city. polite citizens everywhere you go
and not to mention a killer mall – the biggest in the world!!! its intense..
but anyways,
many players have raised families there and praise the city.
players like ryan smyth, messier and even the Great One ’99′
have been seen teared up and extremely disapointed to leave
not to mention just the city, but the fans.
i mean you have to admit, watching the oiler fans sing the national anthem
in the 2006 scf was something spectacular.
and you cant deny that the place is a young, vibrant town.
the city is a great art town and is very involved.
i wish souray the best of luck down there
we will sure miss his killer power play and leadership abilities but i think edmonton will be a great place for him
July 13, 2007 at 5:49 am
Mike (post #5) everything I’ve heard says his wife and children have moved to LA, and that they’re seperated.
July 13, 2007 at 9:31 am
POST #12..sam..”KOVALEV HAS GOT TO PULL HIS WEIGHT AND MAKE THE DIFFERENCE” Sam, this has been the problem with the Habs organisation for quite a while now,it’s there falure to replace the players who eats up the budjet the most and gives nothing in return.Ask yourself why is it Souray is gone and Kovalev is still here? W.T.F. !!! Kovalev fucked us again!!!
July 13, 2007 at 10:42 am
Big Souray fan. Sorry to see him go.
As a team, we won’t miss him. Others are ready to step into the leadership role – his offensive prowess and his defensive ineptness cancel each other out.
Good luck Sheldon!
July 13, 2007 at 2:09 pm
All the best Sheldon, we’ll miss your shot from the point and your willingness to drop your gloves and stick up for your smaller teammates. Wish we could have kept you in the red white and blue but that is the way the league works. Thanks for your years of service, they were fun to watch.
For all of you blaming Gainey… again, I can just shake my head. I guess some people need to have a whipping boy regardless of facts. He made the offer to Souray, Souray decided to test free agency. Knowing that, Gainey had to find a replacement, he couldn’t wait on the chance that Souray wouldn’t get the offers he was looking for and decide to take Gainey up on his offer. So, he signed Hamrlik. I don’t know if Hamrlik is a good replacement or not, we’ll have to wait and see him play a season.
July 13, 2007 at 7:05 pm
I had a feeling Souray would leave. He just didn’t seem genuine in his off-season interviews stating that he hoped he could work a deal with Montreal to stay. I loved watching his offense, but under Carbo’s defensive style of play, he’s just not a good fit. I think we’re better off replaced by Hamrlik.
Good luck Sheldon.
PS…atleast since he’s in Edmonton, we can still see him play every 2nd week or so on CBC’s late game.
July 14, 2007 at 1:52 am
To bad so sad……If he would have signed with MTL for the same contract I think we could have seen his number 44 in the bleachers. You gotta admit though he is living a dream, playing for home province pride. I’m sure we all would have done the same thing.
July 14, 2007 at 6:16 am
It is true that at present Souray´s defensive liabilities and offensive punch cancel eachother out, and as such, he is being overpaid.
The thing with Souray, though, is that he can be used in different ways than what has previously been done – in a way that highlights his abilities while reducing his liabilities.
He should certainly play the power play, or play when the team has the initiative, or when the team is badly in need of a goal and risks must be taken. However, his ice-time could be reduced when it comes to defending against the other teams top lines, penalty killings and such.
He could also be used as a 4th line offensive center that charges the net (he actually likes playing forward) in tandem with being a defenceman used mostly in offensive situation. This would make him a more versatile player, and would make better use of his capacities.
Id also not be surprised that his defensive game improve. After all, this can be taught and learned. Edmonton knows this is a weakness of his and can spend time preparing him better for defensive situations. Kevin Lowe, after all, even teaches his star forwards to block pucks.
So while he is being overpaid right now, it is still possible that he will develop into a more comlpete player than what he is now. Its also possible that he will just be slightly above mediocre forever. We will see.
July 14, 2007 at 7:49 am
Sheldon and his wife have reconciled. He and Ange and the girls will be movng to Edmonton over the course of the summer.
July 14, 2007 at 9:54 am
GREAT! GET THE **** OUT OF HAB’S COUNTRY U MONEY GRABBER, GO GET SCREWED IN THE DEFENSIVE ZONE! HAVE A NICE LIFE!
July 14, 2007 at 7:43 pm
Good luck Sheldon. You’ll need it in Edmonton. Nuff said.
July 15, 2007 at 8:33 am
DId anyone else see the OTR with spezza and Emery. THey pretty much made a joke out of Souray. ALthough he was beat pretty bad a few times I think his defensive shortcomings were greatly overhyped. However to trun down a 4 y/ 22 mil deal from the habs was a quick way to say he was never really interested in returning. I will miss his shot, leadership and toughness. HOwever its a business and 5.5 million is too much to pay for a guy who really never intended to stay from the start. ENOUGH SAID!
July 15, 2007 at 10:50 am
Being a great fan of Gainey, I hate to bring it up, but with the benefit of hindsight, it’s interesting that neither side seemed committed to being together once the season was done. Of course, I’m thinking of the fact that the Habs got nothing for him at the trading deadline (when they could at least have gotten a bag o’ pucks), which is about the same as what they got now…
Hmmmmm.
As I said earlier, Bob better have a great deal in the works or else we’re in for a tough year of defense winning games and lack of scoring losing them.
July 15, 2007 at 12:42 pm
One of my favorite CANADIENS HAS PASSED AWAY.John Ferguson,he was one tough s.o.b. !!!!Two memory’s in brief I”ll bring up about the man:1)I’ll never forget the time near the end of his career when he deeked around Bobby Orr and scored a beauty, man **** Irving was a freeking and everyone looked stuned,LOL.2)I THINK IT WAS EITHER THE STAR OR THE GAZETTE, when they ran a outline of John’s body,a chart showing all the breaks and such,an unreal amount of damage to his body and I think it said in the article he had more broken bone’s than non broken”Over a hundred”. That man gave it his all for the HABS and has set the bar to a very high standard of play,if you want to play hockey for Les Canadiens !!! Thank-you John Ferguson for some great child hood memorys,r.i.p. One more thing, with John and Ted Harris,no one messed with the Habs with out paying the piper,no one!!!
July 15, 2007 at 1:15 pm
There have been reports suggesting that Gainey has reached a 3 year deal with CanadianTire. They are to provide the habs with a bag of pucks every year. Gainey paid double the market price, but is confident that a necessity has been filled.

ya i watched OTR with Spezza and Emery and i didn’t see how they were making a joke of Souray, i guess i was watching a completely different show.

What about giving Forsberg a 1 year deal. He is currently hurt and wouldnt be able to play until December or January, and therefore could come at a real good discount. Its a gamble, but it would get the tzeam excited. If he starts playing well in February and March he could help a lot in the playoffs.
And what about Ryder? When is his arbitration hearing? How much is he expected to get? 3 million?
July 15, 2007 at 2:59 pm
Guess you cant read between teh lines
July 16, 2007 at 2:09 am
Well Sheldon you went and done it! You refused a futher stay with the greatness of les habitants. How dare you leave the habs fans!
We loved you! Yes Sheldon you should of picked us over your family, your your two children and your wife. It didn’t matter that you were probally lonely, and wanting to be a GOOD father in having quality time with your children instead of access time, when you happened to be in town and on vacation.
ha ha ha ha ha. Good luck Sheldon and I agree with poster #13, you will be missed, but we undestand a man’s family is a man’s family. I would rather see you leave us and be a good father to your children then to stay and entertain us. However, the Stanley Cup will be won by Montreal before Edmonton. Hell I would just like to see the Stanley cup remain anywhere in Canada. Come on boys, lets take back our cup. The Americans are getting way to confortable with our Cup. Hockey is our game!
July 17, 2007 at 1:18 pm
some oiler fan said the oilers are gonna win the cup this year. LMFAO! I just hope they don’t come last place in the NHL. I like the oilers because they’re canadians but hey, give me a break.Oilers= Champs? not possible.

I try to be an optimist when it comes to the Habs but I can see no optimism in this coming season. At best Bob Gainey has basically the same team he had last year (Hamerlick for Sourey – Smolinski for Bonk – Kotsopolus for Johnson). Toronto finished ahead of Montreal and kept the same players with the addition of a quality goalie and a 40 goal scorer.Buffalo has lost major players but will still make the playoffs as will New Jersey. In order to justify re-building without making the playoffs, Bob Gainey should show his fans some respect by at least lowering his ticket prices considerably.I think this team could be looking at drafting in the top three next year if a major trade is not made for a bonifide point getter. 5 on 5 was brutal and no Sourey on the powerplay spells long season. Its great to be optimistic but we also have to be realistic.
July 18, 2007 at 7:59 am
Well, the young players are getting better and coming up. This should be a young and fast team.
Id give Carbo maybe a last chance until december. If we are not a top 5 or so teams in the eastern conference by then I’d fire him and bring a coach with a different style. Carbo is too much of a defensive coach, while this team’s players are probably more geared towards playing a fast attacking style.
July 18, 2007 at 11:27 am
Yo Yup,the way Gainey and Carbo have configured the Habs for next season makes for no offence ,regardless of if Carbo stays or not. Now some of you fans say this is going to be Kovalev’s break-out year, lol,or that Saku’s going to take the bull by the horns”one man show”lol,or watch out for Plecks and the rookies ??? or its Hammer time, lol,I’ll put my money’s on the young guys,Lats and Plecks will do better .But really ,there is no offence on this team so you can remove Carbo and put in an offence style coach, but what he going to do,pot him in himself? The Montreal Canadiens are an A.H.L.TEAM PLAYING IN THE N.H.L. Granted ,the pot has been stured but I wouldn’t get my hopes up.Should be interesting to watch till the Dplay puts you to sleep!!!

Xhabsfan;
There are many teams in this league that have no bonafide sniper and still manage to score by commitee and do well. WE may not have a 40 goal man but at the same time our system does not allow a player of Jason Blakes ability to have a break out season and score 40. HIggins, Pleks, Kovy and Ryder are all capable of scoring more but not under this system. Try not to be so darn sarcastic buddy. Live life.

Sheldon Souray is still very much married to Angelica and they are all relocating to Edmonton in the fall. This comes from a very reliable source – his mother a coworker of my mother. This is not another Pronger or Nelander thing. Angelica always lived in LA as that is where the family has a home, Sheldon also lived there when he wasn’t on the road or in Montreal for games.
